I had all kinds of plans for my gtp when I first got her but lately it seems like all I'm seeing is stuff about how bad is (glass tranny, etc.) and it's got me wanting to move on to something else. I went and looked at a ser-v spec and I liked it more than I thought I would. Other than that I've been mulling over a cobalt ss or even a gti. Seems like any of these cars make more power, with more reliability than my poor l67.

So how bout it, can anyone make a case for sticking with the gtp?

This is childish. But I say ditch the Pontiac world unless it's a gto or a g8.

More reliability? How many miles do you have? I highly doubt a VW GTi or Nissan Sentra Spec V will be cheaper or easier to work on,cost less to work on or certianly find parts for when the time comes. Me Id stick with the your car and I hate car payments.

You gotta learn somewhere if you have big aspirations for your cars. Grand prixs are probably the cheaper platforms to mod and your not ruining a newer car if something goes wrong. Cobalts can be made fast, but at a cost. Really your probably going to regret moving to something else.

I've been in your shoes a couple times. but its easy to say ill be happier in this car or this car will be better, but if you ask me gps are great. i mean think about it, cheap insurance, easy and cheap to work on/ have work done, can be made fairly quick while still retaining reliability and low cop attention. you get into say a cobalt ss, cops are gna see that spoiler and throw on the lights.

yes it sucks coming on here and seeing "help car wont run" or " trannys gone". youve gotta keep in mind though no one posts car related threads saying "everythings going well" or " no problems in a while". alot of people will google search something when theyre having a problem, then when they see this site of course theyll hop on and ask for help. alot of these people prolly dnt know sh!t bout their car and dont take care of it.

i think you should do what im doin. i just got into a nice gp with low miles (considering age). but my tastes are starting to change and im feelin an awd turbo car would suite me better. ive felt this way for a few months now. i looked at my options and narrowed it down to a few possible cars. hopped onto a few different forums, and read and read and read. now im thinking i want to hop into a legacy gt. but im gna give it a few years untill i can easily afford one. that way im not burying myself in payments and insurance and repair bills.and by then ill know as much about those cars as i do GPs.

yeah, 1700 for a tranny and that problem is solved forever.
    gti's are slow.
    ser's are meh.
grand prix's a cheap platform for modding. I personally want to get another one someday and just go nuts.

Hmmm quite a few more defenders then I expected. Thanks. I thought even TEP trannies were weak now that the 1" is gone?

na man, nobody runs the 1", unless somehow you got your hands on one.

most just run the upgraded input shaft and hardend 4th gear and shift kit.

and if your motor go boom, a newer low milage motor can be found for 400-600 bucks, which is way cheaper than a new car.

well if you're going turbo then no tranny will stand up without a 1" chain, but you can still find them. (many turbo owners say otherwise however)

If you're staying S/C then you'll be fine without the 1".

If you're SMART about it you'll go buy an LS1 F body... gears intake exhaust and tune and presto mid 12's.

Heads and cam and you're into the 11's.

Much better than dealing with many many mods to hit the 12's. (unless you turbo, then 11's should be easier but you'll need a more expensive transmission)

I sold my gtp and bought a cobalt ss about a month ago. I originally wanted a WRX but I couldn't find any nice ones at a reasonable price. I looked at a wolfsburg jetta and a few Golf GTI's, but then I found the cobalt for 9K. I ended up getting it for $7300 cash, which is at least $3K less than any other coablt ss I'd seen with similar miles/condition. It's a 2006 ss in Laser Blue Metallic, had 55,3xx miles when I picked it up.

The cobalt's nice, I love driving a 5 speed (I was set on getting a car with a manual transmission), but I miss the heated seats and HUD in the GTP. The cobalt is a lot more fun to drive and mods are much cheaper than mods for the GTP.

I say get something else if you're bored with the GTP, that's what I did.

    here's my old GTP:

Had TOG headers, borla catback, 1.9 roller rockers, 3.4MPS, all the other basic stuff. Made 245HP and 326 Ft/Lbs at the wheels in May of '09. Never got it to the track with the wideband tune, so I'll never know what it would have run.

    and here's my SS:

I installed a Vibrant 4-2-1 header/DP and a Magnaflow catback 5 days after I got it and it's already feeling as fast as the GTP did when it was fully modded. It's stock right now other than the header/catback but for $500 you can pick up ZZP's stage 3 kit and have ~250WHP.

There's a lot of cars with a lot more potential to be quick than the grand prix. I miss it sometimes though and I'm actually looking for a cheap gt to drive through the winter. Honestly, it's your car, do what you want, but there are better things out there.
