This is kinda long, but worth the read for some.
Went to Tristates Raceway in Earlville, IA for the annual fall club clash. It's W-body's versus T-birds/Supercoupes. A total of 3 w-bodies were racing, all in the 12's, my gtp, 2 regals (one I tuned). There were about 10 supercoupes/t-birds, most of them very nice looking and fast.
It was a hot day, with temps. in the 80's.
Since I had been mostly tuning in 40-50* weather, the day before I did some more tuning in 80* weather. I have been plagued with misfire/studdering issues for a while, but finally i was able to take the time to get them finally resolved a few days before all. At the end of the night of tuning, I ended up maxing out my stock fuel pump with a rewire. IPW's hit 25 and Inj. duty cycle hit 107%. This is all without knock, which kinda scared me that my knock sensors weren't working, but I saw some .5 blips of knock on shifts. I went home, pissed off knowing the risks of running the car at the track the next day. At home, I looked further in my scans and noticed my wideband AFR was hitting the high 12's low 13's when this was happening. Again, no knock. I thought about the risks of possibly blowing a head gasket/something and checked my timing and it was bouncing around, but averaged in the 13's at WOT. So I figured, I hadn't knocked on those last few runs, I'm not going to change anything else. Low timing is also higher EGT's, but hopefully with E85 it would offset a little, or at least i told myself that.
The next morning, I packed up my stuff and headed 1h and 45 min drive to the track. Got there, threw on Hoosier Qtp's, tire pressure at 19psi, that was fine since my Ebrake was broke anyway to get a decent burnout. Took headlight out and went to inspection. Guy looked at me, signed it, and off I go.
First pass I ran a 13.0 at ~109mph with a 2.2 60ft. Didn't change a thing since the previous night. Checked the scan for knock, no knock, didn't change anything. So I made a few more passes, lost my bracket race by .032 to a t-bird running 14.9's. The rest of my passes were 13.0 and one 13.1. All with 2.1-2.2 60fts with no ebrake burnouts. Car felt like a dog halfway down the track, I knew it was from the loss of fuel. lol Turbo cars should be trapping in the 110-120 range at least.
I watched the races for a bit, then said **** it, I need 12's. So I dropped the tire pressure to 16psi and did a run, no other changes again. Went 12.9 at 107mph on a 2.0 60ft. I noticed my tires didn't break loose after the launch like previous runs. The tires caught off the launch, but once the turbo spooled and hit 2nd gear, i was spinning on most runs.
All in all, a good day for a fuel starved basic turbo gtp. Will have to work on installing a kenne bell boost a pump and probably a decent fuel pump. With the timing as low as it was, boost as low as it was and fuel all over the place, I know there is plenty left in a stock motor. Mods on car as of now:
01 GTP
100k Stock L67 motor, valve covers have never been off. -Seriously.
CT Pt61 turbo kit with Intercooler (2.5" downpipe)
#65 injectors, fp rewire
Built trans
E85
The boost was at 9-10psi which is what the wastegate is set at, I had no boost controller hooked up. Spark plugs were AL103's gapped at .036
Here are some pics, nobody for some reason had a decent camera to take videos:
