I agree %100 minors should be required to wear them.

I disagree %100 adults should have to wear them.

You're acting like were saying they do nothing, and are pointless.

    No one ever said that.

But once again, it should be the individuals choice whether or not they want to wear it.

You are of the right mindset about the ability to live with freedom of choice, but consider the day when you have an accident without wearing SB and suffer injuries and your insurance company fights paying medical expenses because they claim they could have been avoided by wearing SB's.
Just sayin' it could happen someday... Insurance companies can be evil...

I had a good friend die in a car accident where he was ejected from the vehicle through the windshield. The funeral had an open casket and I'll never forget the sight of that. Or the sight of his wife and kids. Don't say that no one else is affected. I don't even think about putting my belt on, it's second nature to me now. In fact, sometimes Ill be driving, and check to see if I buckled it, I don't even know it's there.

Rolled my Celica GTS five times @ 115 MPH and am sure I would not be here today if I had not been wearing my seat belt. I walked away with some glass in my arm and a couple of bumps and bruises, I can not say that my car was so lucky. I am a firm believer of them, but the issue of requiring to wear it by law is a tough one. Not a huge fan of Big Brother, and rules and regulations being forced down your throat, but this type of argument can be said about almost anything. Why were we forced to take certain classes in High School and/or College? Pissed me off I had to take a foreign language class! What the hell do I need that for!! In the grand scheme of things, the big picture, I think it is for the greater good.
I too am also a paid and volunteer firefighter, and have been to too many accidents where had the occupants been wearing a seat belt I believe they would be alive today. It is still your choice, you don't have to wear it, the harm that comes will more than likely only come to you. But if you live in a state where it is required by law to wear one, and you are involved in accident where one of your occupants is killed, especially if they were not belted in, you better get yourself a good lawyer. The driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicles occupants. So, if you are by yourself and feel uncomfortable not wearing it, go commando. But if you are carrying friends or family, maybe you should reconsider and belt yourself and the occupants. As we all know, we never think it can happen to us, but it does.

I agree. Maybe a special tag for your license plate. Oh wait, they have that.

    ONCE again.

I simply started this thread to see if people think it should be "illegal" or not to wear it.

I don't care anything about the pro's and con's of safety.

I see where you are going with this, unfortunately, our lawmakers feel they need to legislate common sense. Kinda like grade school, if one of you makes a mistake, the whole class suffers for it . I don't like the fact that there are so many restrictive laws, but I also think a lot of people lack the common sense to come out of the rain. Trust me, if you teach your children to wear seatbelts now, it will be second nature to them when they are old enough to drive. Yes, there are a lot of stupid, restrictive, draconian laws, but wearing a seatbelt should be common sense.

It's your choice to ride with or without one, and force others who ride with you to wear one.

My simple statement is, it shouldn't be "Illegal" to not wear it.

    It's not stupidity, it's choice.

i totally agree. but u gotta understand its the circle of life. the more people kill them selves off the more space we have available in the world...im pretty sure the lawmakers were emailed by devistated family and friends of car accident victims where they finally said enough emails is enough and made it a law. ive seen a body drop from a wrecked car and my heart dropped. never forget that day. out of four people he was the only one not wearing his seatbelt and the only one who died. After that day i ALWAYS wear a seat belt. i mean hey just cuz its a law doesnt mean u have to follow it. u break laws everyday. so go head and not wear it.

No matter what anyone says, it's not going to make me say "seat belts should be forced to wear"

I don't care if millions die from not wearing it, once again, it's the persons choice.

I've come across a few people, that either almost died BECAUSE of it, or got seriously injured.

It shouldn't be a law at all.. If you don't wanna wear your seat belt, that's fine, you can learn the hard way. If people wanna be unprepared when it comes to an accident, I say let them. It's not my life. Who am I to tell them?

I agree that wearing a seatbelt is a good idea, but I don't like the idea of it being law. If the government is going to pass laws based on making us do what is safest for us, then what's next? Look at all the people dying of high blood pressure and cholesterol problems in this country. Should we ban all unhealthy food? (don't see that happening, too much money behind it) Should we just ban motorcycles completely? They are dangerous even with a helmet. Skydiving? Bungie jumping? Maybe candles should be made illegal due to the risk of a fire in your house. You could make an awful lot of stuff illegal if you use that as your basis for law.

If you want to do something that puts you and only you in danger, go for it. If you want to do something stupid that endangers others, make it illegal.

as far as the law? well, sure it is in place as a cash grab. That being said I would not go anywhere without it on. My wife hated to were them, bugged her shoulder. after years of telling her to wear one the new GP chimes until she puts it on. The chime bugs her more lol and I will NOT disable the chime.

How it affects everyone is insurance rates.
No belt = higher chance of death
Death = more paid out by insurance companies
More paid out by insurance companies = higher rates.
Hope that is simple enough to understand.

Same as not wearing a helmet on a bike. That's fine if you don't want too, but you should have to forfeit your insurance coverage on yourself and pay higher rates.

Wear your seatbelt. Babies do it without crying.
