I am a firm believer of them, but the issue of requiring to wear it by law is a tough one. Not a huge fan of Big Brother, and rules and regulations being forced down your throat, but this type of argument can be said about almost anything. Why were we forced to take certain classes in High School and/or College? Pissed me off I had to take a foreign language class! What the hell do I need that for!! In the grand scheme of things, the big picture, I think it is for the greater good.
I too am also a paid and volunteer firefighter, and have been to too many accidents where had the occupants been wearing a seat belt I believe they would be alive today. It is still your choice, you don't have to wear it, the harm that comes will more than likely only come to you. But if you live in a state where it is required by law to wear one, and you are involved in accident where one of your occupants is killed, especially if they were not belted in, you better get yourself a good lawyer. The driver is responsible for the safety of the vehicles occupants. So, if you are by yourself and feel uncomfortable not wearing it, go commando. But if you are carrying friends or family, maybe you should reconsider and belt yourself and the occupants. As we all know, we never think it can happen to us, but it does.
