Hi - new here and considering a switch from my 04 audi a4 to a gp. Not to ask a stupid question, but if you were to buy a GP in the, oh, say, $12-13k range, and you were considering light mods, maybe, oh say, less than $1k total, would it be a GTP or GXP?

I tried searching but can't figure out how to beat the filter - tried searching "GTP vs. GXP" , "LS4 vs. L67" and other combos but no luck. Figured this topic has probably been beaten to death but maybe not with my parameters.

I did some threads that touched on it and it seems the GXP trans is different and doesn't take extra power as gracefully?

    thx

both lightly modded will keep up at about the same pace. its just that the L67/L32 in the GTP has more aftermarket for it and you can take it farther. if i were in your shoes i'd just pick up a GTP and be done with it.

If you want to mod, you should not get a GXP (generally speaking). There isn't a lot to mod on them in the first place compared to a GTP and there certainly isn't much to mod on them that's cheap.

I got a GXP because I have no plans for performance mods and I'm not a 'hands on' car guy. I leave that kind of stuff for the experts.

Thanks - so GTP with maybe 3.5" pulley and supporting mods, just as reliable as the GXP stock? I'm thinking pretty long-term, maybe owning this thing for 5-6 years. Not going too far down the rabbit-hole with modding the L67 if that's the route I choose.

Get an L32. L67's are pre-2004. No way will you find a pre-04 for that kind of money... you could buy a few on your bank.

Personally, my first pick would be an 04-05 gtp comp-g. the comp-g has the upgraded suspension and 3.29 gearing instead of the 2.93. Plenty of aftermarket support for the gtp (you'll see countless threads on here about that). If you had to, you could also look at an 06-07 GT which despite the name has the same supercharged engine as the 04-05 gtp (L32). Only bad with the 06-07 is a tune is hard to come by. For whatever reason, they can't be tuned, but there are tricks to get past it. Like these guys said, there's not as much aftermarket support for the GXP, but it sounds like maybe a few more options are on the way for them.

Right on, thanks all. Sounds like the comp-g is what I'm after, or else just look for a gxp and keep it stock. It's not that I have to mod, I just figured it might be more economical to get the L32 to the same level as the stock LS4. I wouldn't want to go much further with it. I could get an 05 comp-g for ~$11k, plus (I think) ~$1k for +40chp/ftlbs, as opposed to a gxp with similar miles for $13k or $14k. Honestly the stock gxp is looking better and better, modding the gtp might be a tough sell for the wife.

I hear ya gtpinsc, I'll miss the quattro in west michigan winters, but you'd be surprised how slow the 1.8t a4 is. Stock was just painful. I've got 380cc injectors and a tune to match, and it's about on par with my buddy's stock 08 gp gt. We've never lined them up, that's just a seat-of-the-pants assessment. Handling is a different story though. But it's all irrelevant anyway, I just need to lower my payment. Looking for the best bang for the buck for $13-14k, without going rwd, and I need to fit a carseat in the back

I vote ls1 firebird or camaro. Go RWD. The GTP is fun to drive, kind of pain to work on though. Has great acceleration and ok handling. I have more fun driving the GTP than my RWD Bimmer that can out handle and brake any of my cars. My SS sucks at handling, but is RWD and lots of torque and a good amount of hp its my favorite car. RWD and power = FUN.

Yeah, rwd would open up a lot of options but it's just not practical in the snow belt, unless you can run the winter beater like an old subie for 3 months out of the year. But I just don't have room for 3 cars (2 for me plus my wife's jeep). Also considering some awd cars, and other fwd as well: Volvo s40/v50, saab 9-3 aero (more $$), wrx, maybe even cobalt ss or srt-4. Lots of tradeoffs to think about in terms of power (stock and light mods), comfort, etc.

haha, sorry i completely missed that part. you could pick up a GTP and use the extra cash on repairs or find a car 12-14k with a descent warranty.

9-3 aero is a pretty bad ass car. Quick too, but yea, it costs more then a Grand Prix.

That 2.8l v6 has potential. According to the Saab forums there is a tune for $850 that gets them to ~320chp, 280-ish(?)whp and lots of torque. They can be found with higher mileage for under 14k, I think.

So the bang for the buck factor is pretty good on those also. Maybe even better than a gtp comp-g, I don't know.
