The Prius has a "joystick" for a shifter. Tap it up for R, down down D. So that also means that the shifting is electronic. Toyota built in a limiter, to where the if the engine is over 5000rpm's, you cant shift from D to N, to prevent drivetrain damage. When the engine was WOT, shifting is disabled. So even if he tried to shift into N, he couldn't.

    Toyota FTL.

this is why you don't run a car off of a computer. when computers screw up, you don't know what's gonna happen. if a throttle cable breaks, you car slows down.

I'll be really scared when car companies start going to electronic brakes. That will really suck.

you can't just shift the prius into neutral...IIRC I read somewhere it doesn't allow you do that if the car is at certain speed or RPM.

and it takes 3 seconds of holding start/stop button to turn off the car...that can be the longest 3 seconds of your life when your car is going 100+mph

These cars are having something go electronically wrong with the ECU where the Fail safe is shorting and causing this issue. Someone on some news program can recreate the whole situation with the acceleration on a regular 2010 Toyota vehicle that was supposedly already fixed. Seems to me that their is a much more bigger issue with the cars.

Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.

Steering by wire is going to be fun Hmmm how fun is that gonna be when the steering goes on the fritzz

Honestly I have had throttle cables stick at wot before I just dropped it in neutral and shut it off But with the prius you cant shift it to neutral do the the limiter plus every one keeps bashing the drivers of the cars If my car went haywire and just sped up Id probably panic a little too before common sense kicked in

Ill take mechanical over electronic any day

Some of the Mecerdes-Benz sl500 and e-class cars have been using brake by wire since 2001 and saturn ions use electric power steering systems.

Cobalts and G5 have electronic steering assist. Not steering by wire. SO if you loose power its just mechanical steering.
