Well I have all the data recovered, including all the screen saver submissions and all the documents and how to's I had on the Grand Prix and I got all my tax information and invoice/inventory information. So it all looks good at this point. I was able to format the hard drive with no problems.

Guess I may be going to store this weekend and setting up that Storage Area Network a bit sooner than I thought. But its needed. I dont like having my back up hard drives physically in a PC anyway. This will allow me to hang them off the network and make them accessible to all the PC without being physically mounted to the PC's.

Just remember if you are gonna be running a backup storage system, make sure its gonna be well ventilated. Just like with our cars, heat can mess up a PC in no time. I have found a lot of external HD devices fail to include any kind of active cooling and rely on passive cooling that does not always provide the security that an active cooling solution does.

    Just a thought on that

SS -- before you put any data back on that external drive, i'd test it out with DFT- drive fitness test Download IBM - Hitachi Drive Fitness Test 4.12 - Quick, reliable method to test SCSI and IDE hard disk drives - Softpedia

and if you want to be doubly sure, Spinrite ----> **Home of Gibson Research Corporation** is an excelent product, tho not free. ... but it is one of the best at what it does.

Too late. I already moved all the data back on to it. For what its worth, I dont believe it was a failure of the drive itself. I dont know how, but I think it was due to the fact I left the drive plugged in while re-joining the partitions on the laptop drive and I may have accidentally wiped out the partition information on the external drive.

No kidding. I had to reformat my laptop drive again today due to some issues with my Virus Scanner and Firewall screwing with stuff and I just could not get them fixed so I said the heck with it, live and learn.

Oh how I wish I could run everything I need under Linux. I would be done with Windows in a heart beat.
