Well, here's something totally different from what has been said so far.
I work in the printing industry. Used to be Prepress manager, now doing Quality Control/Plant Supervising for a direct mail company in the chicago area. Basically, i make a living printing "junk mail". It's not mechanical engineering, but it's a decent living so far.

Get into something other than engineering, then. There is good money, and lots of job security, but "mad bank" is a helluva stretch.
I am a mechanical engineer. I have been a project engineer for the government on F-18's, Mack truck on 11L engines, and now an independent company that makes custom vapor cycle systems.

I'm a part time student finishing up some classes in CIS (computer information systems) networking side. I was installing satellite dishes before Xmas and this coming week I am starting an inbound customer representative position at a local service company. I hope to get into general PC repair/upgrades and some network support at some point.

this is all kinds of true. if you want to make a lot of money then this is the wrong career by far unless you work yourself to the bone. i cant complain about my pay in the least (since im 24 and all), but ill never make an extreme amount of money as to where i could buy everything i want whenever i want.
Re: What do you do for a living/going to school for
I am a Manufacturing Engineering for a smallish manufacturing company local here. But I do anything from customer service, project management, tool design, product design, etc, etc.

Printing is big in my family. I have worked at a couple different shops in town, mainly in the bindery, but have run my share of offset presses. But I hate doing the mailing ****. :th_tongue2:
