Well, I've never seen so much smoke come from tailpipes before in my life. Smelled like burning oil. There's smoke coming out behind the rear valve cover, and some up front as well. The whole motor was shaking pretty good, and there was no coolant in the rad. The engine shaking seemed pretty similar to what happened on my 3100 right before I lost the motor. The dipstick was starting to look milky, but I didn't see any metal flakes... At least not on the dipstick.
Code for a cyl 1 misfire was saved in the computer.
Any advice? Is the motor shot or could I maybe save it? Didn't seem to knock, just very very rough, engine shaking idle. It was loud, but seemed like an exhaust issue due to the smoke. Valve cover gaskets leaking into loose exhaust manifolds? Would explain the smoke in the engine bay and the smoke from the tailpipe... But why such a violent idle?

If the rest of the car is in great shape I'd go for it thinking it'll need a new motor. If it doesn't great but if you do have to swap it you'll know.
Good way of lookin at it. Except... errr... I've never done an engine swap. My neighbor has an engine lift though.
Out of curiosity...Which is easier..? An engine or Trans swap? I'm not lookin for an explanation, just want to know which one you would rather do if you had to
On a FWD car, if you are pulling the engine, it is easier to pull the trans with it. So an engine pull, means a trans pull too.

Trust me, its much easier to pull the trans with the engine. You will actually save time (and frustration), versus just pulling the engine and leaving the trans in the bay.
Everytime i've dropped a motor I pulled the trans too but with both of those times I was parting the car out anyway.
