Well I am not 54 years old. I owned a 4x4 and I loved it. I live in a town with less than 40k and I do stuff mostly in the country. I also live more north then you, the snow gets rough.

you cant beat a 4x4. first one i ever owned was when i was 22 and i ended up redoing it and lifting it 20" making my own rock crawler :)
honestly i hate it but i'll give you that it's clean and tasteful to some extent.
lose the rims, get some 18s.
