I thought I'd do the community a favor and type up a review for my take on the game. Please note that I refuse to be a person who just plays online and not the campaign. I cover extensively each of the 3 aspects of the game and give a score out of 10 on each.
THERE ARE NO SPOILERS! I don't even talk about the story, but tell of it's flaws.
Campaign Mode:
When I picked up the game, the first thing I did was unplug my LAN cable so I wouldn't touch Xbox Live. I am always a campaign person and always will be. Now, aside from that. The campaign is solid, and I will point out, it is very hard to follow, you have to really pay attention. If you play it on regular, you can breeze through it in a little under 6 hours. With that said, I recommend everyone to play the campaign, and if it's confusing, play it through twice. It really is a great story, I just wish it had been easily laid out. With that aside, the campaign is a great experience, and I will warn everyone, it is MESSED UP. There are things that will really hit you hard as far as realizing the effects of war and casualties.
Bottom line:
Regular can be finished in 6 or so hours. Easy for beginners,run and gun, takes 7+ shots to get killed and grenades aren't so harmful.
Hardened can be finished probably in 6-8. Tough gameplay, but challenging for regular FPS players. Takes some strategy and cover tactics. Get killed in 4-5 shots, grenades are more powerful.
Veteran can be finished in 10+ hours. Very intense, and requires extreme amounts of patience and strategy. 1-3 shots kill you, and if a grenade indicator is near, you are dead. I HIGHLY recommend playing through on regular once, then veteran ALL THE WAY THROUGH. This greatly puts replay hours on the game and it will help you in so many ways when it comes to learning to take cover in multiplayer. I play every COD on veteran and it really rounds out your skills and is a great experience.
I give campaign mode an 8.5/10
Special Ops
New to COD is Special Ops. Which pits you, and an optional friend via live or splitscreen, in places with certain objectives. You may have to eliminate certain amounts of people, or do something within a time limit, or advance to a certain area, etc. These side missions are also broken down into 3 categories for difficulty. Each op is scored by stars, one for regular, 2 for hardened, and 3 for veteran. There are 23 op's total making 69 stars available
This mode is amazing. It could be the most fun I've had with a COD game, period. The missions they out you through are taxing, yet fun, and are a lot of fun with another player. It takes great cooperative skills to do the task at hand. UNLIKE campaign mode, in Special Ops there are no checkpoints. You die, you lose and are forced to restart. Each special Op is different with what seems like unlimited playability. One mission is a snow mobile race that is an absolute blast.
I give Special Ops a 10/10
Multiplayer
Ah yes, we come at last to multiplayer. What so many people just buy the game for(which is stupid, but i digress). Anyway, the same core is at the heart of Modern Warfare 2. New to MW2 is 3rd person gameplay, which is something you like or hate. The same things are here, upgrades, attachments, perks, level ups, you name it, it's there. Also new to further identify yourself are Titles, and emblems, which are unlocked for certain things done. It may sound bland and the same, but the multiplayer is a blast, the maps are solid and very balanced. I can't really pick one thing out that's wrong, besides the weakness of assault rifles at close range. Another new feature is picking your kill streaks, there is now an extensive list of call ins available that the player gets to unlock and put in place just like create a class. One is for a 25 kill streak, and you get to call in a NUKE! Which ends the game and whoever's team called it in wins. But I can't fathom someone getting 25 kills in a row....
I give Multiplayer a 9/10. It is fun, but is still the same COD, even with the flashy new features.
FINAL REVIEW
Modern Warfare 2 is a must buy for any FPS player. It is a well rounded game with a great replay value and is just so addictive. The graphics are gorgeous, the soundtrack is amazing, the sound effects make you feel as if you are there, and the story is very intricate.
