So the wife and I went to talk to the insurance agent last night. We wanted to look at combining policies and getting everything on her policy. So just wanted to make sure the price was in line before we went ahead with it.

But what I found interesting was when she entered my VIN, it came up as a GT model. Not GTP. She is a friend of ours and knows her cars pretty well. And she knows I have a GTP. But she said it was weird that it didn't list it as that. Is this only a 97 thing, like a lot of stuff? Or are all GTPs that way?

Also, something interesting, she gave me the "Anti-theft" discount because apparently my car has it, or so their computer tells her. So does it? I thought it was the Pass-key thing that buicks and such have. That they have a chip in their key that has to be programmed to that certain car. So what does my GTP have that gets the discount?

But not too bad of a quote. Keeping the same coverage as my wife's (full coverage, $250 deductible, full tort, etc) it will only be $300 every 6 months. Pretty good considering my not-so-spotless driving record.

All 1997 Grand Prix's are GT's. Some just have the 'GTP' package.

With American Family my sons 99 vin came up as a GTP and cost more in premiums because of that designation.

Yep all 97 and 98s are GTs with GTP package. That's one reason insurance rates are so cheap.

My friend has a Mach 1 but insurance only recognizes it as a GT. I was disappointed insurance caught my Impala SS. I was hoping to sneak it through as a LS.

Yeah I laughed when I was told mine was considered a performance car and would cost more than my 05 LS.

I have American Family too. Though, my agent knows of my car being of the GTP model, but only had me in his computer as a GT because when I got my car, thats all they had in their computer. Some years later, they updated their computers, so now based on my VIN number my policy now reads GTP but my rates didn't increase because of the additional P on the name. Maybe I got lucky.

I bought my 1997 in 2001 and I carry full coverage, and the cars labeled as a pleasure vehicle. (based on the mileage it gets drive yearly)

Yeah, I thought I had heard about the 97s being listed as GT model, with the GTP option. But my previous insurance company has it listed as a GTP. Odd.

What do you mean by this? My previous 97 was a very early production car, made in Oct or Nov 96, and had the supercharger. I didn't know of any GTPs that didn't have a supercharger.

You can tell who had the early production cars. vs. the late production ones, and it also goes into the 1998's a little too.

Examples would be rear mast antenna instead of it being in the rear window, and a hood prop rod instead of hydraulic props.

That would be me! The rear mast antenna gets annoying sometimes, like when people put things on it (I live in a college town). The prop rod has never bothered me except that one time I forgot to secure it properly (been 2 years, and I still think twice before I poke my head under the hood).

Yea, Mine's listed as a GT, as well. I won't complain! Until I'm 25, I'll need all the help with insurance I can get.

Or getting married will help ya too I am told. I'm 28, and dating, and I remember calling my agent to give me a discount cause they didn't automatically do it next policy time when I turned 25. It did knock quite a bit off.

Yeah, my last 97 was an early car. It has the antenna in the window and hydraulic hood shocks.

My current 97 is a later one with a mast antenna and still hydraulic hood shocks.

I think those things are just random.

How hard would it be to convert mine to a window antenna? Or... maybe I should go Euro style...

I don't know if it would be worth the work. You would need to remove the old antenna, have a body shop fill in the hole in the fender, buy a new or used rear back window, and have it installed. Its a lot of work for what it would accomplish.

One issue with a window antenna is certain types of window tinting can't be used. Tint with metal in it can mess up the antenna. Either that, or I was screwed out of an extra $30 on my Impala tint.

Reflective type tinting is then not an option, if you considered it.
