I didnt get the bird half way in and oil was all over the place splashing and running down the side of the pot onto the burner! This WAS outside lol. I had to find a metal bowl and start scooping the hot oil out so it wasnt overfull! I was pretty pissed about the huge mess on our patio out back and that oil is a pain to clean up. The second one I did I saw a trick on tv about putting in a turkey still in the wrapper and then filling the pot with water to desired level, pull out the turkey and the level where the water was is where you fill the oil to. That method works great! On to my scary FIRE experience! It was snowing or raining pretty bad after the second round and I couldnt drain the oil out after it cooled so the pot sat outside for a while. I then learned that the small hole in the lid was letting melted snow/ water into the pot and it was bad enough to start trickling out of the pot and making a huge mess out of our patio again. I decided to try to get the water out so I could save the oil. There was a huge ice cube in the pot so i pulled that out and thought I would just heat the pot and boil the water out..... BAD IDEA!!!! If you have never mixed water and oil and let it sit then oil will alwasy sit on top of the water. I fired up the burner and get the oil heated up and let the water boil/vapor out the top. That plan didnt work so well! 4 gallons of oil sitting on top of water in a big pot is like a bomb waiting to go off when heated up! Water boils at 212 and it was like clockwork, the temp gauge was around 210 and the water was literally exploding under the oil and you could feel the impact through the ground inside the house! MARSHMELLOW TIME!!!! Because of this oil blew out the top of the pot all over the place and especially on the burner and around the outside of the pot and i had a nice 10+ foot tall oil fire less than 10 feet from my patio door Not much I could do other than jump out to shut the gas off and let it burn off and cool down, wow what a mess and a huge scare that was! After that go around there were no more fires lol. If you notice the pot I use now in my picture the top of it has a wider lip on it to keep the splashing oil in the pot, not going on the outside of it and it works just like it is supposed to. There is also a drain spout on it to drain the oil which is very nice to have!

yeesh!

so totally off topic, dave... but why is the guy in your avatar running with a meat clever?
