Yeah, this thread was dug from the grave.

170k miles on my '04 and still original, still not babied, still no major problems. Driven hard as a DD.

It better go 300k, that was my original plan. After that, I'd probably drop in a new/used engine and give it to the kid.
    04 CompG, DP, Wizair, 180 t-stat, 18" Verde 5ives, my DD...170,000 and counting!

ok, no laughing: I just traded in a car that had been in the family since '99. It was a 96 Buick Regal, 4 door, 3.8L. My mother got it with 20k on the clock, I traded it in with 135k. That motor ran like new, no leaks, good power, good mileage. It would still smoke the tires from a hole shot ( showing my age again.....). It was spec'd from the factory at 205hp, and I'd say they were all still there! I wasn't all that good to her either. Usually gave it the 3k oil change, but now and then it went over ( way over ). Even the tranni was still working flawlessly. I know were talking about Ponitacs, but I'm guessing the 3.8 bottem end is similar if not the same, no?

Anybody know if the bottem ends are beefed up on the SC modles?

The s/c'ed 3800 and the N/A 3800 have the same bottom ends. The only difference is the pistons, N/A's have a higher compression ratio. The 3.8 has changed through the years.

As far as the Pontiac comment...The 3800 is really a Buick motor. You would be surprised how many GM cars have them...

No I wouldn't. I was working on the 3800 when it was the 3.8, bolted to a THM200 or metric 200r4 tranni, in the GM G bodies......... God help me, I'm old....... Back then they were called the 'shaker 6'. The number six cylinder would often crap out, and the motor would keep going, just shook like mad. GM has a habit of doing that since the mid eighties, no? A good motor gets put into everything. Come to think of it, even a bad motor gets ( ie: 2.8L ) put into everything!!

It shook like crazy because of the lack of balancing the crank...i.e. no balance shafts...those were added in the Pre Series I 3800...I think in the late '80's...Bonneville/Park Avenue.
