Okay, well I thought I would take on another project to kinda help out the community. I thought of this when I read another post where someone mentioned a site that used to have a fairly good collection of exhaust clips but has since fell off the map I guess. So I thought, why not rally the community to get this done again. So here goes.

I will, as of now, be collecting audio clips only (No Video) of the exhausts out there from stock to the most expensive after market set ups. I will list some guidelines below, but this will be open to Grand Prixs, Regals, Monte's, and so on. So, get your digital audio recorders fired up and lets see if we can set this site even further apart from all the others.

    Guidelines and Information

    1. Will need Year, Make, Model and Engine. Include RPO code if known.
    2. Recordings are to be no less than 128k sampling rate.
    3. Clips should be no less than 15 seconds in length and include idle, one blip and a hold at around 2000 RPM.
    4. Recordings should be taken from the middle of the back bumper between 10 - 15 from exhaust tips but on the level or height of the exhaust tips.
    5. All mods should be listed that relate to the engine.

Right now I'll leave the Guidelines and Information open for a few days so that it can be discussed and any additional information that is needed added to the list. I will show the status as closed below once I feel that we have enough information to begin collecting the sound clips. At which point I will have anyone with a submission email me the clips and I will organize them.

Please keep this thread on point. If it doesn't relate to the collection of the sound clips or the guideline and information discussion, I ask that you start a new thread in the appropriate section of the board. Thanks.

Guidelines and Information list status: Open

I like this idea. We had some clips on the RMCGP site, but we apparently didn't pay our domain renewal fee

If I can resurrect the stored data, I will see which ones are useful for this project.

Yeah I made a post at clubgp trying to figure out what happened to rmcgp database. But apparently they can't even get any info from it for another 3 months or so. That is what the people in charge of it posted over in my thread.

I've got some good video clips of my exhaust, but no audio files.

Well I can probably snag just the audio if you want to send them my way.

Just be sure to include all the relevant information. Year, make, model, mods, etc. First and Last name, screen name.

Well my original thought was that with the proliferation of MP3 players that have voice recording capability, that would be the way to go. That said, I had not thought much past that.

So, if video is the only way you can do it, then that is fine by me. I can strip the video and just save the audio track anyway. So have at it. The important thing is that every clip is taken from the same area behind the car as per my first post and that all the relevant information is collects also per my first post. With that, people should be able to see where they are and compare it to what they are listening to.

Forgive my ignorance, but why not use video's? It is a lot easier to tell which direction the mic is pointing, etc.

Well a couple different reasons. First is bandwidth. Video is a bandwith hog, so just using audio helps in that respect. Second, we are mainly interested in the sound, so a recording device that is dedicated to sound recording should sound better than something that is tasked with doing audio and video.

I have a dedicated MP3 player that has amazing sound, as I would expect it to since that is what its designed for. But I also have a Palm Tungsten that has an MP3 player and the sound is no where near as nice, but it wasnt specifically built for that task. It has good sound, but nothing like that of the dedicated MP3 player

What about cell phones? Most phones now aday can record voice memos. I've never looked into getting a voice memo off a phone and onto a computer to see how it sounds but since phones are becoming mp3 players more and more they may do an alright job at playback/recording? Just an idea.

That could work, but I would be afraid it wouldnt capture the deep throaty bass sounds of some exhaust systems well.

Glad someone is suggesting the idea. I have plans for exhaust this summer. I have no idea what to buy. I would like to hear what they sound like first.
