Re: How do Hondas make so much power with such little boost and mods?
Its just crazy that a engine that has 2 less cylinders and is almost half of the displacement can make so much more power. Technology is frickin stupid. Having to put a fs intercooler on and run e85 just to keep up with a newer N/A v6 mustang lol.

Doesn't really matter much because who the hell would get caught dead driving one of those fart cans... Lol
Not me, don't care how much power it makes!
Re: How do Hondas make so much power with such little boost and mods?
I rode in a honda once, felt every bump in the road.
Re: How do Hondas make so much power with such little boost and mods?
As others have pointed out, simplest answer is turbo > supercharger.
The 3.4L DOHC V6 (LQ1) available in the first gen w-bodies made a max of 215hp stock, but regularly produce well over 300whp on just 6-8lbs of boost (not to mention the 60° V6 sounds infinitely better than the 90° motors). There's a reason Fiero guys love that motor. Here's one producing 417whp/427wtq on just 8.7psi.

Another example is the 3.1L found in the gen I Ws. They were only 140hp n/a, but the McLaren Turbo version made 205hp with a TINY Garrett T25. That's a 65 hp gain from a turbo that's way too small for that engine (GM claimed it was to eliminate lag, but let's get real; they didn't want the TGP romping on the 'Vette). Compare this years later to the 3800 starting out with 195hp, but only gaining 45hp with a supercharger.

only good part of this is one guy can strip it down to a short block and lift it out the bay by hand lol
Disagree 100%. I've seen quite a few built Hondas take abuse and beg for me.. The turbo kit my cousin just bought is going to net him over 400 FWHP and it will still be daily drivable.

You can't compare a NHRA dragster to a street car.
First is the type of fuel they use, then the amount
This is how much just one of 8 cylinders use

Don't get me wrong I would keep my pontiac but I don't give a sh*t if I had a 680whp civic or even a Prius I would rock that daily!!

Well I guess there is probably not a ginormous difference. If an m90 take a 100whp on a 2.8 and I'm making 300whp right now then theoretically I would have a 400whp car if I switched to a turbo. Still not as good as a honda or this 3.4l but at least its in the same ballparkish.

That is f*cking INSANE!! Ya I guess they aren't really comparable. I have am uncle that's a mechanic for the army dragster but I've only met the guy a couple times but he gave my family pit passes a couple years ago and that was awesome

Certainly the engine in question will make a big difference in the outcome (e.g. being DOHC with much better flowing heads, the LQ1 responds significantly better to boost than the 3800). However, even with the 3800, a turbo will do much better than 400whp with 10+psi.

Im with ya.. Purpleguys turbo kit is looking better everyday
Re: How do Hondas make so much power with such little boost and mods?
Any car can be made fast if you dump enough money into it. I have beaten non intercooled turbo hondas with just a 3.4 pulley and supporting mods. If that person then dumped more money into it then they would be faster. It is still a ****ty econo car at the end of the day. Think the guy with the Ferrari 360 gives two ****s that a 400HP Honda might beat it is a straight line? Also those peaky engines suck for a daily driver, but fun at the track. Meh, everything is a give and take; it is just that kids tend to get more easily impressed by crappy cars with a **** ton of money dumped into them, which coincidentally would have allowed that same person to buy a better car.

Well personally I don't feel the need for a self driving car with a panorama sun roof with a 20" navigation head unit. Id much rather have a car that hauls a** and can handle decently. I'm personally extremely happy with my grand prix. When I first got in it and saw that a 1999 car had a mpg tracker I was frickin amazed. Technology is super cool and if I was rich I would probably buy a tesla or something but if I had to choose between comfort and unnecasy ammenities or speed I would choose speed every time.

I never said anything about technology. I was talking about engineering of better cars. You'll get it as you drive better cars as you gain more experience.
