Oh, for the record, stay the hell away from junk glocks. there is a reason they are cheap and easy to fix.

i would find someone local that did it part time and would always get the prices 100 to 200 under retail.
How do you get your guns so cheap?
A good XD in my area goes for $500+!
x3!
You need to do some more homework on ammunition, my friend. The most affective round is the one you can place on target.
I personally do not care for Glocks, as they do not fit my hand, but this is another opinion that is not based on fact. There is a reason so many agencies issue Glocks, and it is not because they are junk.
To the O.P., get the gun that you are most comfortable with. All of the guns you listed are reputable, and remember that you can find enough people that hate any firearm if you look around. If you can, handle each one and shoot it before you decide on that model. Everyone is built differently, so what is comfortable to me may not be to you. Also, above all else, get the gun you will be willing to shoot the most. A gun is only a blunt object unless you are capable of shooting it. 9mm is cheap and effective, so keep that in mind if money is somewhat of an issue. Shooting is not cheap, but you have to in order to be comfortable with the weapon. I would rather own a 9mm that I can afford to shoot a few times a month then a .50AE that I cannot afford to take out of the box. Also, blow all of the "macho" caliber nonsense off. You do not need a .45 or a .40 or even a 9mm to have enough power to stop someone.
Also, in regards to being licensed to carry, take a class or two first. You will be surprised at what all there is to learn from it.
They use GLOCKS due to the fact that they are cheap to repair and replace.
Most in illinois use Sigs or S&W, we got a few agents that do use glocks and are often in for warranty work on their sidearms. Its not my opinion, its a fact based on the number of GLOCKS I send out to be repaired weekly.
the CC, take the classes, they help ALOT, Id buy a few books and DVD's as well, the safer you are the more you will remain a free man.
a .40 /.45 is not macho, its a very common caliber for handguns. a .357( like I have) is overkill for home protection but Id rather put the fear of god into a stranger entering my house unwelcome then make a mess on my walls.
I just bought my wife a .38 special for her purse and the vehicle. Someone out there always has something bigger and faster then what you got. I do agree a .50 is good for nothing in this country, too expensive and too heavy not to mention the recoil factor.
Which one are you leaning towards?
I defently like the s&w m&p in .40 thats probably what i will get.
It's sounds like you are pretty knowledgeable about guns. But you have never owned a glock. I feel confident that if you did you would not have a problem with them.
The number one reason for glock waranty repairs is over oiling. The second reason is under oiling.
I feel that pretty much ALL guns are reliable and will last forever if the proper maintence is done to keep it up.Wich it sounds like you know the PROPER way to take care of them.
While that is mostly true, there are some manufactors that use cheaper parts & softer metal that make them not reliable( at least not for long). As far as the best caliber for self-defense goes, carry the largest caliber you feel comfortable carrying. The S&W M&P series are awesome handguns. Ive shot them and all but sold my glock for one, but there are more parts out there for the glock and so many more options. The most reliable handgun out there is the 1911...time tested and war proven.
We have 2 glocks in my home. My wife has a Glock 27 and I have a Glock 23. Both guns are great. They are the choice for law enforcement and Military personel. Glock is actually on back order right now for OVER 200,000 guns (Glock 19 9mm). I use mine for protection and for going out the range with the wife about once a month to just fire off a few rounds and have some fun.
The Glock is a very good design. They are super easy to field strip and clean. I can field strip my gun and put it back together in under 30 seconds. No im not a gun freak or some crazy psycho that hangs upside down blind folded taking apart my gun and putting it back together. It is litterally that simple. I was torn between the Glock 19, Glock 23 and the Springfield XDM. The reason I got the Glock 23 was because its was damn near impossible to find a Glock 19 and the XDM didnt make a compact version. Me and my wife conceal carry when we go out and the Glock 23 compact is very easily concealed and my wifes Glock 27 is a sub compact that fits perfectly in her purse.
Dont be turned away from glock. They have a limited LIFETIME WARRENTY and parts are cheap if you want to upgrade or swap a part out. If you want more infor on Glock's, go over to Glock Talk Home and read up a little on them.
my main carry is a 4 inch 357, magnaported, wrap around combat grips and some trigger work,i love revolvers but may get a 40, not sure
