Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
Reading mixed reviews on polishing the crank while it's in the block. Some say it's OK, other say H to the L no. But if I take the crank out, it's my understanding I would also then need to line hoan the block before it all goes back together?

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
if you take the crank out toss it in the trash and find a used block. or spend 4 times the money and drop it at a shop.
like i said, its been done by a few members and they are still running around. its a crap shoot. not gonna lie to you. ive been saying " you may be able to save it" for a reason lol
i say give it a shot, if it fails the plasigauge spec test. then you can start to plan your next step.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
Video of the slop in the one rod bearing. Hope it may help someone out there diagnose a similar issue.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
wow, thats a lot of slop. you'll need to see just how round that journal is still.
seeing that it maybe best to find a used engine and drop it in.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
Honestly, it seems like the bearing is just gone and wore away. I'll have to pull another and see what it looks like cause the one from there is so thin. And the crank at that location isn't grooved or anything so I'll have to have my machinist friend bring a measuring caliper over and measure the journals and find out where I'm at.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
yup. see if its egged or not. or if you can fit a over sized bearing in there or not. i cant believe you didnt hear that yet.......its a flapping loose.
used engine seems like the logical thing at this point tho. be more reliable really, cause this repair is hit or miss.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
I did hear it, just building my experience as to pinpointing what it was. I think the guy I bought it from had half Lucas oil treatment half 15w40 in it when I bought it BC I never heard a thing till I changed the oil. I think I've decided to measure the journals and if they are in spec, polish them, new bearings and give it a shot. If I blow it up, I'm out the bearings really and end up dropping in a new engine anyways.

Engine is dead. Started working on the bearings, found three of six are spun. The crank journal on number six is beyond saving so looks like its time for a new engine.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
Scottydoggs, how hard is it to drop a s/c engine in my na? Was going to say nm, that one you sent me just responded, it's sold already, but I'd still like to know. PM me if it's a lengthy explanation.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
its about as easy as drop it in, and change a pig tail or two for a map sensor and the boost bypass solenoid. and a little tuning.
gone already, damn that sucks. but at least the seller dint just leave you hanging. what sucks is the body would have gotten a few hundred for scrap, thats like a free engine.
n/a engines are easier to come by. if you find a sc one id take it tho. look for buick lucerne part outs too. same 3800.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
I think I've settled on an 02 Impala 3800 S2, 127k for $600. Still more than I want to pay but it's pulled already, the cert that it ran before it was pulled and they have 60 day guarantee on block and internals. I've printed out the "How to pull an engine Bill boost style" thread and pinned it to the garage wall. Half the list is done already as i' very torn down my engine. I plan on using my current LIM on up and swapping it to the new engine. Anything else I should be aware of/have to swap between impala engine and GP engine? Starter?....

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
unless it had CA emissions it should just bolt in, plug in and work.
CA Crap you need to change the rear manifold to yours.

Re: Southeast WI 01 GT
Is the impala engine going to make about the same horsepower as what I had?
