Wheel and tire setup for track.

Ok so now that I have a new car Im itching to take it to the track here in march. That being said I need to find a set of wheels and tires for the front. I can snag as set of stock flat 5 spokes off my t boned car when Im home in Feb, or if its better option to find some wider 16 inch wheels I could do that too.
Don't think bigger than 16 inch wheels would be worth it because I'd assume they would just cost more for tires.

Im looking for some input on just putting some drag radials on the stock size 16s or what would be better. I don't want to spend a fortune on the wheels and I don't care what they look like if I get a different set. A local race shop has a ton of Mickey Thompsons on hand too.

Im basically looking for a decent wheel and tire setup for the front with out spending a ton.

What size are others using on stock 16s?

Any input on what others have used would be greatly appreciated!!

No comment on rims.

But for tires, get some cheap ass snow tires. Will be loads cheaper than DR's and you don't even need to heat em up.

plan is another 1k to 1200 bucks for a set of wheels and dr's and a simple 75 shot setup and I hope to be in the 11s with some practice and a noob driver.........

I had snow tires on my Rivera for a summer ( got them dirt cheap ) best traction I ever had in that car, but they only lasted me the 6 month summer

screw snow tires instead of DRs...I've heard of it before, and seen dumbasses try it....too narrow, not rated for speeds that high, and bald quicker than any family gene....I've heard the material becomes very soft at higher temperatures, thus people experimenting, but snow tires lose whatever fraction of charm they possess if necessity to corner becomes an issue...any small twist and turn can result in a very bad outcome, I've seen it at Cecil in MD....a cheap DR > cheap snow tire...

How can they be more narrow and not speed rated???

Unless you're a retard and pick a smaller tire. All snow tires have triple the tread siping than a regular tire and must be speed rated for daily use. Besides it's not like our pos cars can go over an H or W rating of like 120-130mph in the 1/4th mile.

Anything over 40º will wear a snow tire quicker, but they will just hook and grab at those temps because they are so soft. It's a straight line race and not a road course, should get tons of passes out of a set. I said it's an option. I'd do it because of how cheap I can get them.

yup, cause I said they were not speed rated...read a bit more carefully...sure rating has to do with straight line, but like I said before, take a turn or slight bend on a dry surface, you tell me how that goes for ya, k...and a good snow tire will always be more narrow with a higher sidewall, an aspect that helps them in the snow...sure you can go buy a specific snow tire for the track, but why? ...lame....for whatever gain you think you may have gotten, it would typically be outshined by a cheap summer tire let alone a cheap DR..

IIRC Hoosier makes a decent 225/50/16 if you plan to stick to stock wheels....

cmon cam the right tool for the job here, sure it may work but why even try if I was in ND and didn't have much choice maybe but I said in the first post a speed shop here I was in today has a ton of Mickey Thompsons on hand....... snow tires will not happen moving on..........

stock wheels are what, 6.5 right? ...do MTs have anything to fit that? ..you can luck out on a older set of 16 inch mustang wheels too....

That's exactly what im looking at 6.5 is a pain in the ass to find a tire that fits and is close to the same height as a 225/50/16. I may end up looking for some cheapo mustang 16 or even 17s in like a 8 inch wide rim that would open up the tire options.

No +15 them would look like butt on a mustang too I don't think that's right. I dunno. I need to keep looking for some rim options too or else I will take 2 off the t boned car at home.
