Say goodbye to any form of mpg with 4.10s

I had a 72 Cutlass with a 455 rocket dual pumper demon turbo 350 trans and 4.10 gears... I think it was like 5mpg lol

On a plus note it'd practically pick the front tires off the ground

there is no need for 4.10s with this conservative set up, 3.73s or 3.42s would move out pretty well while retaining some gas mileage

Yes 4:10s sound like overkill for me. The gears that I got on the picture are also OEM 3:23s. I'm going to keep the same ratio for now. Nice ride by the way.

Most are 100% clear, I got this one used and it has some kind of tint to it. I first wanted a black one, but I liked how this one looked in the end.

4.10s wouldn't hurt mpgs that bad on the modern LS1 but who drives a 5.7L V8 for gas mileage anyways? That's a ridiculous statement if you want good mpgs get a 4cyl

yes good choice, plus if you like street racing 4.10s are just going to disappoint you, not only will you run out of rpm up top but with the tires you have it would have no chance of hooking up.

3.73's are nice middle of the road even a 3.55 i think it was, in that neighborhood were also a good middle of the road.

with a lower gear your pull harder/faster off the line but dont get the same top speed as the stock gear ratio.

i know hes got a better trans and all being newer, but my brother chevelle was good for 45 mph on the highway, it would scream its ass off. lots of fun around town, but not for a long trip.

my firebird had 3.73 gears, its launched damn good, and i got up to 150 mph, and held it there at 1/4 throttle, had lots of pedal left but never went for any more.

my brothers car would max out at 106 in the 1/4 mile and that was about as fast as it was gonna get up to. but it got there pretty fast.

    My sh1t is here:

I don't know much about gears but it looks ok to me. Now the thing is that I was out driving today for about an hour or so and the rear end was screaming like crazy as usual. I have aftermarket amp and speakers and I can still hear it with the volume up. But it suddenly stopped making the noise haha. You could still hear it but it was no where near the way it used to be. I stopped for a while to pick up the box with the gears and the noise came back again.

I thought that if the gears were shot it would not stop making the noise no matter what, am I right? Maybe it just needs an oil change and positive gear additive? I guess we will know when we drop the cover?

Maybe the oil heated up enough to quiet down the noise? Not sure man. For what it costs for oil, just change it and see what happens.

^ This. I'd get enough cheap fluid to change it out and see what happens. If it still makes noise after you gotta replace some parts. I've never heard a rear end stop making noise and not be completely broken. A friends rear end in his truck was howling like that and when it stopped making noise he said he had enough time to realize it stopped making noise, say hmmmmm, then boom, lock-up/shatter, done.

i lost the rear end in my old dodge truck, its howled like a banshee till the gears chunk ed up and locked the rear up, took 2 weeks to kill it. i was off road got hung up on some rocks and the gear oil leaked out the pinion seal. left me with no lube, and it died fast. i did refill it on the way home, but it was to late.

so maybe your low on gear oil. end seals leak and such.

My pinion seal leaked a little when I got my car, like scott said, might be a good idea to check that out. It's where the driveshaft connects to the rear end, just check to see if its all oily there. Not hard to change it. I've done it on 2 different cars now Lol.

once they howl, its over from my own past experiences.

i bet you need new bearings too. as im sure thats what is howling in the beginning.

Yea the bearings are usually what let go first. Get one of these, it helps hold those bearing main caps in place:
