figure i will share this here
tonight i let my cousin nick drive my gp, we were entering an on ramp where two lanes merged into one to enter the interstate or the right lane had the option for going of going to a side street

anyway as we were entering this on ramp i look over to my left and see a mid 00's bmw with a punk looking kind in the drivers seat, i could kinda tell the way he was looking my car over he was getting ready to try and beat us onto the interstate.
i turn to my cousin nick and tell him this, look back and the punk kid is giving me the finger as hes starting to pass us, i yell "NICK PUNCH IT!!) so he punches it, waited about two seconds and the supercharger makes itself known, we start to walk pass him, as he slams on his brakes and decides to take the side street
this made my day, not sure about the model or year of the bmw i just know he got whooped lol

anyway i got a 99 malibu on trade plus cash for one of my other cars, its got 152k miles, 3.1l engine, it has problems over heating says the old owner, a shop in town put new intake gaskets on it, apparently coolant was draining out of the intake gaskets lol

head gaskets are natoriously bad on 3.1's. that would be my guess. i seen it a lot when i worked at atkins auto

if its head gaskets i will just put a new motor in it, im not messing with that crap lol, kinda think about the t-stats and if it might be bad seeing as it still has coolant, no loos of power and no smoke out the exhaust

maybe but you'd be lucky, my money is the head gaskets on the early stages of going out.

yeah atkins auto put the intake gaskets on it and the head guy (rick?) said that the car was really hot when it came in, anyway they put new intake gaskets in it, drove it half way to newhall without it getting hot then called it good, the owner picked it up drove it 4 miles out of atkins and it got hot, brought it back and parked it at atkins auto where i picked it up, i am figuring it needs a new engine but i want to look over the other possibilitys first

how hard is it to replace a t-stat on a 3.1?

its pretty gay on a 3.1, are the radiator hoses really stiff? or can they still be squized easily? if they are very firm then the head gasket is toast

just did lower intake gaskets on my gtp figured i would share a few pics

i got all the parts from the dealer and i did in fact use metal lim gaskets

cleaned everything i could in the parts washer before re installing

after i got it running i used engine degreeser on everything but the intake filter

everything turned out great, my engine runs cooler and i get better mpgs, before the engine ran about 195 at highway speeds, now without having the computer on it and just guessing off the gauge i would say its in the mid 180s

i went from an average of 18.2mpgs on the DIC or whatever its called to about 24mpgs

all in all it took about a week from when i noticed the coolant leak to ordering the parts and getting it back on the road

i ended up changing the lower intake gaskets, supercharger gasket, coolant elbows, valve cover gaskets/grommets and the throttle body gasket

as of right now the tensioner for the s/c has gotten weak and needs replaced, on start up you can watch the belt jump off the tensioner and jump over a grove on the crank pully! but it only does it once.

the right rear caliper is leaking but i cant seem to find a replacement for it thats factory powder coated

and the sun roof acts up when its over 75ish degrees outside

usally at highway speeds it sits at the first hash past the 1/4 line

i also ordered a few comp G badges since mine never got one in 04 (early build date)
