Get a downpipe with high flow cat and u-bend delete first. Unless you will use headers. Plan the build all the way through and decide where you want to end up before you start. Because this way you'll avoid buying things more than once trying to do it step by step.

No 3.5 without other mods, 93 octane is not enough.

Best mod is always maintenance. Once you get that up to speed, then think mods
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

trust me i have done all the maintenance suggested in the thread" safely modifying a 3800 .i was wondering if it would be worth to me of the cost of headers and a pulley for the performance gain .thats why the question about the horsepower gain also if i can do this w/ stock pcm?

ive got rockers, headers, and a 3.4. it ran ok on the stock tune, except for the ridiculous KR. but tuning has really woken it up.

so a tuned pcm is recommended for sure to get the most out of it.

Turbo is your best bang for your buck. In the end you will want one anyway.

not unless your like me, who knows anything more will kill the tranny, and im not looking to spend the kind of money a turbo tranny will command.

a simple 3.4 set up is a nice kick in the pants over stock. its still not a race car, but much better.

i love how everybody chimes in with "headers" , everytime someone brings up downpipe or plog.
would headers be better ? absolutely
can you get em cheaper than a downpipe / plog combo ? sure
the difference is installation. i feel pretty confident i could pull off a DP / plog install on my own with minimal tools and knowledge / resources... headers ? not so much.
so one has to take installation into account when suggesting headers.
i was talking to a local mechanic the other day that's owned his own shop for over 30 years. i asked what he would charge me to install headers. he flew into a story about doing headers on a dodge ram the week before and showed me the scabs all over his hands , and said it took 6 hours to get em installed right.
he also added he thinks that'll be the last header job he'll ever do because there's easier work to be done ...
anywho i know this guy charges $70 an hour for labor because he's done work for me in the past. so the owner of that truck paid at least $420 + tax for install off those headers.
so if you can't do the install yourself, do some pricing on installation before hand before you buy them.

i had my old crap off in like 3 to 4 hours, headers flew on in like a hour or so. (solo, no help at all)

truth is, the dp bolts are the fighters, not the manifold bolts. one of them stripped out on me and i had to break out the grinder to cut the head of the bolt off.

headers are a lot easier then its made out to be. not a big deal to install at all.

for you maybe , but not everybody is as knowledgeable or mechanically inclined as you. so it took you 4 or 5 hours and you KNOW what you were doing and probably got a garage full of tools....lol

little hint. id never done headers on a 3800 before i did mine 3,000 miles ago. its like no tools either, i did it all with a 30 piece socket set, a 13 mm ratcheting box wrench, ( highly recommended) and a breaker bar with a 18 mm for the rear sub frame bolts, two jack stands and a floor jack. every how to i read said to take the TB off, i didnt even do that, there was enough room with a few extensions to get them bolts off.

and a angle grinder lol only one bolt snapped it was a cross over bolt, so its best to break them, vs strip them if you know what i mean.

my car also had 230,000 miles on it at the time of install.

i ask everybody i see that looks like they might know of somebody or someplace that could do a tune , and haven't found anyone yet. heck it even looks like i'll have to buy a pulley puller if i wanna drop pulley size. nobody wthin 150 miles of here is gonna have one.
i see a bunch of GP's around here but nobody mods em ... all the modded cars i see are ricers.
