Since I have a basic steering wheel without audio controls, and I've found those controls not only useful but necessary as I have only one functioning hand, I want to add a GT2 leather wrapped wheel with the controls. My questions are: 1) what tools do I need to release the airbag module from the wheel, and 2) even with a plug & play car... what other parts will I need? If I basically have to gut & rewire the column, then will it be more convenient to simply replace the entire column?

Madmonkey has done it and iirc TheNoob23 as well. Find their ride threads one of them shows how they did it in their thread.

on the back of the steering wheel theres 4 small holes stick the largest screw driver that will fit in the holes and turn it, theres a spring clip your unlocking, do one side at a time.

then you need a small 2 jaw puller to get the wheel off, then you'll need a new clock spring to work the radio controls, the clock spring plugs into a wire that goes to the radio, you may need that too.

I saw the four slots in the back of the steering wheel; when you have the tool(s) inserted, do you pull the handle(s) away from the column, or push towards? It's not that clear, and I've been all over the net trying to find out...

you twist it, you'll feel the spring move. the first clip you need to pull the air bag up and hold it up till the next one on the same side is done.

this is a regal, but yours works the same way. this vid shows what your un clipping. no need to take the plastic off the back of the wheel, this guy was still trying to figure it out i guess.
