    THIS IS MY FIRST POST

    Hello,

A friend of mine had a 1997 pontiac gran prix gtp supercharged sitting at his place for a few years. All he knew was it squeaked really loud... Not a car person...

Anyway, I traded him a bike for the car cause he just wanted it gone...

Checked for oil, and threw in a battery. It started right up.

replaced the belts, water pump ( his was stuck causing all the noise and destroying the belts ), one belt tension bracket assembly thing, a few idler pulleys, and thermostat. It started again and made no bad noises, just smooth v6 with a bit of supercharger whine. Only ran it for about 15 seconds cause it has no coolant. I wanted to wait for the gasket seal to harden and put in coolant along with a oil and filter change tomorrow.

Anything I should look for with this series of car to keep it running? It seem like it might be another lucky buy.

In the past I inherited my grandfathers 1994 oldsmobile 88 with the 3800 series naturally aspirated engine but that car is long gone. How do these compare?

    Thanks!!!

The Series II engine in the 97 is very comparable in reliability and longevity to the Series I in the 1994 Olds. While a few things are different, the basics remain the same.

Glad to have you on the forum.

I will, right now the car is at another friends house while i work on it.

it has a few electrical issues... the interior lights stay on for some reason and the windows don't work. the power steering only half works...

It pulls well, spins the tires with no effort...

however, the the "service engine soon" light comes on after you do a few WOT pulls... checked it with a friends cheapy scanner and is comes up with a "p0303" code. cylinder #3 misfire...

I know the car sat for about 3 years so i plan on checking the plugs, wires, coils, and doing a compression check.

OH, AND IT HAS A HUD THAT SHOWS MPH ON THE WINDOW!!! OMG SOOOOOOOO COOL......... LOL

Well, throw some new Irridium plugs in it, cheap lifetime wires and it should take care of the miss. And always be sure to run at least 91+ octane in it if you don't already. Windows could be a fuse or master switch issue, rack could be shot.

it has no rust California car...

Pulled the #3 spark plug and it was cracked...

New plugs + wires and it feels great, no check engine light after 45 min of driving it around the block.

I need to tackle the power steering at some point... why would the rack and pinion fail? or maybe the power steering pump?

smashed spark plug means you chipped a piston. your friend was using 87 octane i bet. and beat on it hard.

it will run for a while as is, but it will smash another plug soon, your gonna need a new used engine.

short of the seats, it looks ok for the trade of a bike
