For the last 11 years or so, I told my co-worker if he ever wanted to sell his GTP, I'd buy it, so this year I did.

Being a Pontiac guy, (In the past, 1982 TA, !987 GTA, 1986 Sunbird Turbo) and currently owning a 1984 Trans Am, 1984 Fiero and with Pontiac restructured out of the new GM, a GTP 4 door sedan seemed to make total sense to me.

I found this forum as we did some general maintenance repairs and was impressed by the content.

Sadly, I wish I had found this forum before I found out these cars become really expensive to repair when the rockers rust. Covered by the aero package, I had no idea how badly the 1999-2003 cars rust underneath that plastic. After having my good friend and body shop owner evaluate the rocker rust, I am not sure I can commit to keeping this one on the road.

    Ha!

    Welcome to my world.

Air Hose, sand paper, and Permatex Rust Treatment Spray. It's not all that bad.

    Passenger side cleaned up.

I would need someone to weld in both inner and outer rockers and the passenger floor plan cleaned up. $1600 for both sides is the quote. A shame since it is a loaded car with a very clean interior for 120000 miles and it runs great.

Guy^ that rocker you put up a picture of is just covering the mess. If its rusting or gone already its going to need a whole lot more than just cleaning up and throwing some rust treatment spray on it. The left side of that pictures looks like it has a big hole in it and is only going to get worse until the cancer is cut out and new clean metal replaced. So YES some cars will need 1600 dollars worth of work done esp if its done by a shop! Sure it can be done for less if its a job people can do on their own. Take a picute of your car a year from now I'll bet it will be worse than it is now.......

Now here is a real link that you know shows some pictures how to properly fix rusted rocker panels. Yes this car needed quite a bit of work but I'd bet my entire bank account it will last much much longer than the half-as$ed job you have done on yours!

I didn't know you needed the completed project.

That "hole" on the left is what *I* cut out from someone covering the rust with plastic weld.

    It has been fixed since.

Anything else I can do for you massa?

And considering he's talking about trashing the car just because of that, I think the "halfassed" way I did it would work just fine.

Ha leaving a big gaping hole and saying it was all cleaned up is exactly that. "HALFAS$ED!" Why don't you take a look around the forum and maybe use the search button. Certainly others have fixed the rusted rocker problem the right way that apparently you don't see. Like I said "Take a picute of your car a year from now I'll bet it will be worse than it is now......."

Your last pics says all cleaned up with the big gaping hole still in the panel. All cleaned up would tend to make people believe it was done....... Hope yours was fixed right instead of just covered up.

Here is another thread to take a look at from a member here that did the repair the right way and also took it a little bit further as to cover the whole underside to protect it from rusting.

Not to start a battle on how everyone repairs their rockers...

There is no inner rocker or outer, not even the front fender attached at the bottom because where the bolt attaches, the metal is gone.

Basically, you have the floorpan (well, most of it anyways), a bit of rusty metal, and the aero package, which is only held in place by two bolts, the ones at the top going into the wheel wells.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

And we'll jeez, the rust converter I use only came up 4.5/5 stars.

Since I'm sure you did research before running your c#ck-holster, what do YOU think I should do to repair a part that nobody ever sees on a 217,000 mile car that I paid $1,000 for?

Cause I'd have to say, my "halfassed" strategy is doing fine.

Here clown maybe you should use your car as a parts car and go pick this up.

    http://fargo.craigslist.org/cto/4065350815.html

That car is a billion times cleaner and cheaper than the rusted covered up mess you have going on. Rust convertor is exactly that its a cover up guy and if the metal is already rotted convertor isn't going to do ****. Congrats on the battery tray you now know how to clean up metal and paint it. Good luck with a welder amature.

Ohh and that car on the fargo craigslist im sure is walking distance from you if you live in fargo haha just so you don't have to take your rusted mess out of the driveway.

PS that cars got way less miles on it than yours too and cheaper!

Oh as for MOS I work on radars 94M yeah that's a year long mos guy good luck getting through any maintenance program since you know maintenance requires using power tools not just painting LMFAO this isn't 11th grade art class. And Im in DC with the NDARNG on a homeland security mission. If I told you more about the 1-188th ADA I'd have to hunt you don't in the big city of Moorhead when I get home. Now go away child and learn how to use a welder.......

Your welcome I showed you 2 threads now of how to properly fix the rocker rust and you should PM ITHURTZ and maybe he can teach you how to run a welder.......

So I expect your going to look at that car from the craiglist ad in what maybe 10 15minutes? It would really help your rust issues......

I'm immature because I don't care to partake in an online pissing match?

You are the voice of reason.

Also, that engine is siezed, and I'd never spend the energy transferring a 217k engine into it.

Also, when my car was listed, it looked good too. It was a bad investment, no doubt.

So now I'm just working with what I've got.

You ARE partaking in a pissing match and you are acting immature because your arguments are flawed and getting blown out of the water.
