Basically just get the cooling system up to pressure and check for any coolant leaks.(cooling system pressure tester) Also watch the pressure gauge and make sure it doesn't drop in case it is internal. Most likely it's your intake manifold gaskets or a radiator hose since I'm not sure the coolant elbows would even be able to make it to an exhaust manifold. They should be replaced no matter what since they're cheap and will go bad soon anyway if not already. Look real good around the whole intake manifold and feel both radiator hoses and both heater hoses. If you saw a lot of smoke it can't be too hard to find the leak.

Thanks yea this was a huge amount of smoke i have had cars overheat on me before(I work at a dealership) so I thought it was a busted hose or something easy that i would pick out immediately because the sane exact thing happend to me with a civic and a mountaineer both times heat didn't shoot up but both times a lot of smoke a busted hose each time and a lot of coolant everywhere this one had no tell tale signs but I think either way bad or not i will do the intake manifold gaskets and elbows as procaution if the head gasket is good don't touch it right? Not even as procaution

The head gaskets very rarely ever go on Series II and III 3.8's. You really have to overheat them before you can get them to blow, but by then the motor would probably develop other problems. I'd say just find the cause first since 2 shops said it was the head gasket. That's still not making the odds very high in my opinion though. Did you look specifically around the intake manifold and radiator hoses? You'll see it pooled up my the intake since there's a lower area it can sit in. The intake gaskets should be replaced no matter what since they will go at some point, they're plastic. The new lower gaskets are aluminum. And yes the elbows should be done for sure, the upper goes into the upper intake so you'll have to remove it anyway. Oh wait, you're S/Ced, I'm not sure exactly how they're routed then, my car is naturally aspirated.(It's what I'm used to)

Well if you could help me I could always come to you I don't mind long trips I would just be worried to drive the car I took it off the road for right now and I have an old friend who hopefully can help me out saturday but I don't know how that's going to go I'm just looking at all my options obviously the best job but also somewhat cost efficient just because at 17 I have to manage my money very carefully but I also want the job done right so I put that into consideration

    yeah dont drive it.

rent or buy a pressure tester for the rad, pump it up see where its leaking from. more then likely its a elbow that blew up, under 10 bucks and your done.

heres the how too. its easy. http://www.grandprixforums.net/showt...coolant+elbows

OK.. let's clarify. You said there was a lot of smoke in the engine bay, right? HG's almost would never blow smoke outwardly like that. Sounds like it runs. Get us a vid of it running for say 20-30 seconds. In the vid, hit the throttle quick once or twice to say bring the rpm from idle to 1500-2000 just a quick hit and release. Then add a few pics of the overall engine. Each side and that coolant leak you see.

You'd be impressed with how much we can tell you from that little vid.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Upload vid to youtube upload pics to imageshack or photobucket.
I'm also putting my money on a coolant elbow or lim gasket. I'm pretty sure you would blow the engine before ever blowing a head gasket, this is a 3800 not a 3100/3400.

in this pic, see all the wetness under the snout, thats a classic coolant elbow thats leaking.

why its smoking out the pipes like that i dont know. does it do that every time you first start it up? or has it stopped doing it now since the ride around the block?
