I'm A new member whom I have registered here in order to help a friend with her 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP!
I'm an avid car guy, but more specific I'm A Cadillac Fanatic!

The latest issue seems to be the infamous P0171 code that has started to come on with in the last week.
I have a hand held scanner and checked the DTC and cleared it. It seemed to come back on immediately.
A bit of history on the car: My Friend "Michelle" is the 3rd owner of a black on tan leather 1999 Pontiac GTP.
The car is fully loaded, and seems in very good condition. She bought the car from another family friend that
maintained it at the same shop for a good portion of it's life.

Most recently about 2 weeks ago when she left work it was difficult to start & when it did it ran really bad.
She, had it towed to the same mechanic that always repaired it, and it was diagnosed as a bad MAF.
She had it replaced, and they returned the car the next day and it was back to normal. We looked over the
records from the previous owner and noticed that the LIM was done around November of last year, the alternator
was done the month before that & so on.

She commutes about 45 miles one way to her job and bought this car because she was driving her 1999 Chevrolet Camaro Z28
and it was using a lot of fuel and the ware and tear was starting to take its toll. She does still have the Z28 and has no intention
of sailing it. She paid in my mind top dollar for this car ($3800) and it seems to continue to require a lot of attention mechanically and I'm sure it is because the both are older cars. I didn't mention that the car has also had the power window motor on the driver door replaced, & shortly after that the passenger one stopped working a short time after that but at least it was up so she hasn't had it fixed yet. Then the last thing that has happened was the rear view mirror inside the car came of the window, but after a little repair kit obtained from our local auto repair store, it is holding up fine. It seems like about every month this car requires a costly repair, sure it is nice but it hasn't been cheap. BTW, ever since the light has been coming on lately it doesn't seem to change the way it runs. however, she has mentioned a air like sound from in the dash board, but it just sounded to me like the climate control cycling, something you get used to in a Cadillac.

I forgot to mention that the car has 149,413 miles on it. I live near her job so she is known to come over about a couple of times a week. I figured i would look for a vacuum leak and spray the throttle body. I also read on here that the EGR tube could possibly have a crack, so i figured i would look to see how much trouble it would be to pull it off and check it with water. I will try to check for vacuum leaks and spray the throttle body first and then let you know the outcome.

It took a bit longer for our schedules to permit the time for me to check it out, but I was able to glance her over & I did locate several rotted / weathered vacuum lines as well as another vacuum line that had several attempts to patch previous leaks. After replacing the vacuum lines with new ones, I cleared the P0171 code and test drove it, all was good. The check engine light has come on here and there, but seems to stay off for the most part. I did check the code and it was a P0171 that caused it to come on. It has managed to stay off for a while now, so before any further diagnoses could be done, it has had another problem. I will start a new thread describing the latest problem witch all began with a blown radiator hose......
