Great to find you guys. I normally play around with T birds but got a Grand Prix in 2006 and fell in love with it... Even though my T Bird of 96 just is a get up a go with that big block 4.6.. Looking to get some expertise from you guys and if I can be of assistance I will be more than happy.. I am always looking for easier ways to service and repair.. But it still needs to be done right..I spent 30 plus years in the Electrical/Mechanical field but not on Cars..

    Hi.. welcome.

Quick one for you.. about how many horses does the anniversary T bird put down. I once had one keep up a bit better than I expected.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Bill- 4.6L V8 tbirds have 220hp at the crank from the factory, stock. the V6 supercoupe ones (m90) i wanna say is 245hp at the crank, the turbocoupe ones(not sure what size turbo) im not sure. the 3 SVT tbirds made in 98 (one was crushed, one was parted out, i forget what exactly happened to the 3rd but its not alive) made much more- they had the dohc mark viii/cobra engine with an m90 and svt tbird wheels in mustang bolt pattern from the factory.

I've had a 94 supercoupe that was at 18 pounds and kept up with a built lt1 but also I had supporting mods and I miss it!!! And I had a said 94 big block 4.6 which is a 289 small block that wouldnt keep up with a q45..

Bill if that bird was keeping up and you didn't hear a whine it could have possibly of been a pi swapped tbird or cammed or a full bolt on or a 32v 4.6 swapped but a stock bird would get its ass ate!!! Mine barely did a burnout drifted good on wet ground. Didn't have to peddle it just kept it floor boarded and it held a perfect slide and Rpms

op I've had 3 and there my favorite car so I know a little sense I've owned all but the older turbo coupes

Yes the stock Coupe was not very impressive 220hp but with a mustang shift kit and a different cam its basically the same engine as the interceptor used on the cop cars. I am looking for a motor and for some reason (I have been told) That 96 wont interchange with a 95 or 97. Actually its parked now after I gunned it and it appear s the motor locked although I have done nothing but remove the belt and try to turn over the crank... Never made a noise or nothing...I put a can of sea foam in it and ran it round the block trying to clear out a little hesitation it had being sat up and that when it shut down.. Kinda weird usually any engine I have had lock made some kind of dirty noise....this was like someone turned the key off...The wife wants to scrap it..HUH..lol I love that car totally different ride than a GP low to the ground but it hugs the road.. Thing with the Tbirds is if you spend a little you will more than likely get it back on a sale. That body style as become very collectible.PS Guy's thanks for the welcome I have a few questions on the gp I will post. I promise I always use the search function first cause I know there is nothing worse than repeat questions.

If it was keeping up it was most likely a dohc swapped in from a mark viii or a full pi swap with supporting mods. a lot of guys on tccoa do that, almost everyone has the pi heads cam and intake as a minimum, except my 97 is stock.
Also you can swap in a pre96 engine (96/97 mostly the same) but the 94/95 engines are prone to head gasket leaks, and have a terrible transmission, among other problems.

Also FWIW the 289ci 4.6L v8s are small block fords. The tbird (96/97) got the same engine as the stangs minus the pi heads cam intake. I wanted to do a mark viii swap and a manual swap into mine and boost it, but never got around to it

thank you so,U guys have taught me things I thought I knew lol.. Without really digging into why a motor wont trn over cause its locked I really don't know what the problem is. I used to tackle many things when I was younger but right now I dont have the facilities..I just can't bring myself to junk it because I do know what I have already done to it in less than 20.000 as far as front end and other things.. The tranny is new from about 30;000... I use to have connections here in Houston but at the moment most shut shop. I have built many Industrial air cooled engines in my days.. I was very strict with tolerances. I got quoted 2900 for a rebuilt motor plus 700 to install. From a place called Thunderbolt. The radiator is new although it will need a new intake manifold cause ford had a problem with the all plastic ones..I just don't want to get roped in at a price where there is no ending. THanks guys for the advise and the offers of help.

    Welcome.

I have nothing personal against Thunderbolt, but I did use them once about 12 years ago. Their work was ok, but certainly not stellar. Several of the guys I worked with at the dealership later told me some horror stories about some of their motors. Mine has been fine, but it certainly wasn't top notch work. For that $$$, I would think you could do much better by swapping to a better motor or get some place like Westside Machine to rebuild it and give it some more power.

If you were closer to MA you could buy my 97tbird for 3x less than that and swap the engine in yourself easy peasy if you wanted.
