1997 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8L non. I began hearing a squealing sound that seemed to be coming from the other side of my dash board. This sound got louder as I pushed the gas and let off as I let off the gas. On my way home from class yesterday I heard something that sounded as if it was falling in the engine then my back passenger side tire ran it over. I went back for it and this is what I found. My car still drove me to and from work but my power steering did go out as i pulled into my driveway. Also after this part falling I smell a strong burning odor that seemed to start the second I start the car. Thank you to anyone who reads this!!

    That is your tensioner pulley.

The accessory belt drives the alternator, water pump and power steering. Did your temp spike?
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Thank you BillBoost37 I feel like an idiot not realizing that was the part.. I guess mostly because the car still ran, belt turned and no overheating occured therefore I thought it was air related.. The sounds previous the part falling off were more like squealing not squeaking it sounded nothing like a belt. Thank you again it was the tensioner pully somehow the belt just kept on rollin..

    Again thanks for the help!!

That's crazy how that happens. It must have really been making some noise leading up to that event.

That reminds me of when I was in drivers training. I was in the drivers training car, I think it was a chevy malibu or lumina with like 250,000 miles. I was going around 40mph on a straight road when all of a sudden it felt and sounded as if we ran over something fairly large, like a rock. The old lady driver instructor yelled "YOU GOT TO LOOK AT THE ROAD AND STOP RUNNING OVER THINGS!" when I clearly saw nothing in the road. About 30 seconds goes by, and it happened again, this time the instructor saw that there was nothing on the road and just said "hmm". Then it happened again less than a minute later, and the car started to loose power, and my speedometer went right to 0 while I was still going 40. Yeah we ended up pulling over and waiting 40 minutes for a tow truck.
I didn't have much mechanical knowledge at the time, I still wonder what could have gone wrong.
