Under the steering wheel thingy is a small tab you can pop out, stick a screw driver or whatever up there and you'll push up a white tab, that will release the key. You can take the cover off and super duper glue that white tab up and you'll never have the issue again.................maybe, lol.

My '98 had this issue. It was a broken wire on a switch in the console that actuates when the shifter is put into park.
It could also be a bad solenoid in the column, but I would check the wire harness in the console first.

just fixed mine today. took the solenoid out, put the small metal plunger in my vice and twisted the mother off , re installed it , problem solved.
could have just left it out , but didn't.

Gee, thanks Madness hadn't thought of that!! Seriously I appreciate your other links, I did try and search and hasn't come across but one of those. Obviously didnt use the right combo of keywords. Gives me a few things to look into, I will investigate the broken wire issues first and so forth, kinda guy who wants things to work as made, but guess if I can't diagnose and fix properly, I have other things to fall back on now. Thanks again.

you can pop the pin out of the plug, the broken wire pin that is. and then get a new wire from a junk yard and splice it in.

or cut and splice it back together if theres enough wire left to work with off the plug.

solder and shrink tubes works best. it never fails.
