Would turning it to a straight pipe help gas mileage and increase horsepower and what else would it do or is that just a lie?

Yeah, no. Cutting the cat out or straight piping the exhaust does nothing. You wont gain anything but some bleeding ears from the drone of the muffler-less exhaust.

The cat converter is there for fueling on some of our cars, you cut it out, say goodbye to fuel economy. I don't know what kind of car you drive, but just leave it the way it is.

Unless you're planning on going quick leave it there. If you take it out with the U-bend, you'll pick up a few ponies, but you'll have to tune out a check engine light code.

try going for a performance downpipe/highflow cat/u-bend delete combo for the best gains and money spent, you'll pick up the most noticable power from that, wont set off any check engine lights and with the stock catback it wont be all that much louder than stock
