Looking for a nice GTP for the round trip to work (1200km) once every three weeks and to dd on my days off at home. I'm wanting the 97-03' model and have researched a little bit prior to coming here. What years are the best to shop for?
Looking forward to starting some mild mods.

regardless get under the car your looking at and check for rust chances are there will be some check rear strut towers for rust also.

Everyone has their opinions. These are mine
I prefer the 1998 - 2000 for the automatic climate control (set it and forget it) and the extra switch on the shifter for performance mode.
However a clean body trumps everything because the powertrain will far outlast the body. Check the subframe under floorpan for rust as well as the floorpan itself. If both of those look good the fuel and brake lines are usually in good shape as well. Check the tops of all four strut towers where the struts bolt to the body, inside and outside.
Outside of that anything 1998-2002 is good. 1997 was the first year and the 2003 was supposed to be the new body style but wasn't.

    98-02. bookend years are goofy.
Irridium spark plugs last 100k mi and work just as well as copper. Copper is a waste on N/A and only lasts 15k mi. Don't use Platinum.
Use 195* tstat unless you can thoroughly explain why not; 99.9% don't need a lower temp.
Almost any oil filter, ever, is of higher quality than ACDelco. Spend $6+.
