My 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT started overheartin while driving and low coolant light came on, I pulled over(not by store) and let it cool down completely, made it to gas station and added coolant to backup reservoir, drove home(about a mile) turned car off and let cool completely, will not start now(tries to but does not turn over) I am a young girl with not much mechanical knowledge, unfortunately! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Welcome! You may have a couple of things happening. 1. It could be the upper intake manifold burned through at the EGR port---this is generally accompanied by white smoke out of the exhaust. 2. The lower intake manifold is leaking--check the oil. 3. The coolant elbows to the lower intake manifold like to break and leak. 4. Leaky radiator. Of the things I stated, numbers 1, 2, and 3 are the most likely culprits.

Kinda odd that it wont want to start now.

But I'd venture to guess that the car has slowly been eating coolant from the Lower intake gaskets and it reached a point where is got low enough to start causing it to overheat.

Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the key to ON? (can you hear the buzzing sound from around the rear of the car.)

When you say it tries to start but won't do you mean the engine is turning and won't start or do you mean the engine is trying to turn but won't.

There is a big difference between the two:

    1) Engine is turning but won't start - ignition, fuel or faulty sensor etc.
    2) Engine is trying to turn - Coolant may be in the cylinders AKA hydrolocked.

#2 is worst case scenario. A hydrolocked condition requires an experienced mechanic to dissasemble the top of the engine and replace faulty seals.

im voting lim failure and hydro locked, take the spark plugs out and crank the engine over. if coolant comes out of a spark plug hole thats the problem.

stop trying to start it, that can cause bearing failure in the bottom end.

I'm voting everyone that said LIM gaskets would go buy an NA car and learn what happens. LIM's don't hydrolock motors. UIM's do.

Carilyn, Please read this and print this out for the person that does work on your car.

If you have a car buddy or a friend that's willing to help you take off the air tube intake and or the throttle body, this can be quickly confirmed as a bad upper intake manifold. If that's the case, it's a pretty simple fix usually. What you said about how it happened is the exact scenario that typically occurs.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
