Hey fellas, lemme get through these introductions real quick:

I drive a 1999 GT, and live in Las Vegas

In all honesty- my GT is in terrible condition. I bought it from my friend about 2 months ago, and fixed it up into working and legal condition (the front flex pipe had broken and was just spewing out carcinogens right into my face (figuratively speaking)). 1500$ and a few dozen headaches later, i thought i was finished with car troubles for a while.

After work today, i found my car broken in to. Here's the best part:
    THEY STOLE MY FAVORITE HOODY

But also they destroyed the ignition. My key doesn't fit in anymore.

Now i'm not entirely sure what to do. I filed a police report and i'm going to have it towed to my house tomorrow, but I don't know what to do about the ignition.

How difficult is this thing going to be to fix?

To put in a new ignition its not that bad, however you need to get the key in there to get the old one out. make a 2nd key that you can kill just in case so you dont kill your good one

Well the thing is- the would-be car thief (who really sucks at his job) managed to break a bunch of pins in the ignition, and whatnot. If you imagine what the ignition would look like after all the housing is broken off and after hitting it several times with an icepick, then you'll have a pretty good idea of the damage.

My knowledge of cars is limited mostly to the physics of cars. I know almost nothing about the ignition, or pretty much anything on the steering column.

Is there an alternative way to replacing the ignition? I'm open to all suggestions. I mean, if i can hacksaw it off, and that would work, I would do it

AIDS takes a long time to Die form, Cyanide would work good. OR stuff the airbag with Glass and thumb tacks and when someone messes with it BOOM!!!!

Welcome and sorry for your troubles, you should be able to replace the ignition lock cylinder with little hassle, ac delco has them, 1997-1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Ignition Lock and Cylinder Switch - Body Electrical - AC Delco 97-99 Grand Prix Ignition Lock and Cylinder Switch - 4734-05006977 - PartsGeek
You may be able to find one cheaper on ebay, I don't know. You should be able to find a simple write up on google if you need help with the anything as well.
