Hi there, I'm Pete and I recently got a 2001 Grand Prix GTP Supercharger that has a few issues with it. There's no rust or anything like that its just I'm wondering what audio system I should put in it.. Right now it has the Bose System with OnStar and the previous owner has blown the back speakers and they sound horrible... I'm also thinking the last owner had another deck in there and put the stock deck back in as there are some RCA cables that seem to run no where (at least I cannot find where the lead to). The passenger window is picky and goes down when it feels like it. ALSO it burns oil, but not all the time - which I thought was odd. When I noticed this I took it back to the dealer and they said the valves were leaking and they "fixed" them. A few days later it was burning again and I saw on here that there was a recall for my type of vehicle for this problem, so I contacted GM and the "Customer Relations" specialist really didn't know much. She was replying to my questions with "Uhhhh" and would put me on hold. Finally she came back stating my car was not recalled.

I know some of this may be in the incorrect section but instead of making several posts I thought I would save some time and put it all in one post.

well welcome! hmm. about the sound/speakers. if it were me i would just get new rear speakers and keep the bose. its a nice system. wish i had it. its the only option my car doesnt have. only burning oil part of the time? so i have a few simple ideas. oil has to go somewhere. is it leaking then burning on the exhaust manifold? or if you have too much oil, it has to go some where. so make sure its not overfilled. same if you have too little. there wont be enough and there will be more friction=heat, which will cause it to burn. start your car and take the oil cap off and feel if theres any pressure or smoke coming out of the valve cover. but since your burning oil only sometime, my guess is a bad gasket. does it burn only when you put more of a load on your car? (racing it) or does it happen normal driving too? sorry for such a long post. but the oil problem could be so many things im trying to narrow it down further.

oh and hopefully its not blowing out of your valve cover. then you would have bad rings from oil getting into the cylinder and burning.

The burning oil thing happens under normal driving conditions. But I think it was because it was low. Until I read your post I didn't even think of that and it was WAY too low so I got it taken care of and it didn't make the smell at all. Even when it wouldn't burn it would still smell. What I considered burning was actually seeing the smoke. We'll give a few days and see if the problem persists.

As for the Bose system, it does sound alright if I have it turned up, which is odd I would have thought the louder I had it the worse it sounded. I'm sure the speakers are blown in the rear though. Any suggestions on replacements that won't require much work to put in?

Another question I had was about the steering wheel controls. They don't work and in fact don't even light up. I've swapped out the fuses and had the dealer look at it (as it was having another minor issue that they got fixed for me) and he told me it wasn't the stock stereo, which I found odd because if it wasn't the stock stereo would the station/cd track number show on my HUD? It is a "stock" deck but there is that possibility its not THE stock deck that was in the car before I got it. Its not 100% necessary to have the steering wheel controls working, but it would be a nice thing to have.

Wow, I'm starting to compile quite a list of things wrong with the vehicle BUT they are mostly minor things that can be dealt with. The thing that drew me to the car was the price, the miles, the fact that it was black with black leather and everything already professionally tinted (definitely not the crap you get at Wal-Mart), and the fact that ever since I was able to (legally) drive I've wanted a Grand Prix.

    Thanks for the help!

no problem. as for the speakers. im not sure. ive never had mine out so i wouldnt know sizes. you might be able to find information on another thread involving that. you mentiond there might have been an aftermarket deck installed? that would be whats causing your steering wheel controls not to work. unless you buy an adapter they wont work with an aftermarket radio. so im guessing when the bose was reinstalled it wasnt connected or something. yeah everyone has minor problems with their car.
