Hi there, I am interested in purchasing a 97 coupe GTP for my lady and thought I'd wright you to see if there are any mechanical/electrical problems that I need to be aware of. I will most likely purchase a silver GTP with 137k miles this weekend for 2K, please let me know if this car is worth it.

IF there is no problems, sounds like a good deal.

-Check the tranny stick for clutch material
    -Check the oil
    -Check for leaks
-Make sure you drive it at 45 mph+ to make sure it goes in 4th gear.

Electrical issues most of the time are blown fuses.. so if somethings not working, check the fuse first.

    If the a/c doesn't work, I'd offer $1500-1000 but it's still a good deal at 2k

The 97's were the first year of this design, so it is kind of the oddball as far as the gtp's go. There are a few things different on the 97's than 98-03's but as long as your not planning on modding it, it's not a very big deal.

As far as checking the car out, like said above, these transmissions lose 4th gear sometimes, best way to check is to take it up a large hill that will put load on the car in 4th and if you feel a jerking, then its on its way out... Then check plugs and may want to ask if has the original fuel pump or when it was replaced. Also check the s/c by letting it run and listening for almost a popping sound around the snout. The next step would be to take just the s/c belt off and feel for play while turning the pulley back and forth, if there is, its most likely a worn coupler that is only $30 to replace, but if its a 140k stock s/c, you can find a used s/c for around $200.

i dont think my gfs 01gtp has a 4th gear. was it still problematic in the 01s? the rpms never drop or raise when going from 3 to drive or drive to 3 and it never feels like it shifts out. but the rmps only get to about 3k at 70 down the road
