Well, earlier today my forward band decided to snap (Turning left at an intersection going like 10 MPH lol). Can only move in 1/2 now. I want to get the car back on the road, but I don't have the cash for a rebuild since I just got my motorcycle. Id like to learn how to work on transmissions but haven't a clue where to start. Is there a writeup on this forum or maybe a video somewhere for a step-by-step on replacing the forward band? Would be my first time taking out a transmission/digging into one but am willing to learn.

get the manual from scotty. then all you need is a forward band and channel plate gaskets if you leave the vb/channel plate together. You'll be amazed at what a sloppy mess our transmissions are until you put the 4th stator in place. Drive it until you decide to rebuild it.

Downside is you'll want to pull it for this fix.. but it can be done.

Drive it until I rebuild it. The car vibrates pretty bad around 25MPH but evens out around 40ish. I just dont want the car stranded on the side of the road just in case the band for 1/2 decides to also snap haha.

Once post you ask for advice and the next you sound like you plan to drive it til it drops. I'm either drunk (nope) or confused

Sorry to confuse ya, worded that pretty bad lol. Meant to ask its fine to drive even if that forward band is broke? Cause you said "Drive it until you decide to rebuild it".

Ahhh.. my thought process didn't translate that well either. I meant pull the trans, put in the forward band only, slap the rest back together and drive it until you decide to go and rebuild the entire thing.

Say two hours to have it on the floor, another hour to disassemble it as a first timer, 5 seconds to put new band in place, then another hour to reassemble, 2 more hours and it's back in and running. Call it a day to have it working again for one $40 band.

This is the newer band that is considered upgraded. Borg Warner 4T65E Hi Energy Forward/Rear Band 2001+ 24213361 | eBay

It's not like it can't fail, as seen by the 06 one I found broken this past week. But it doesn't break as often.

Thanks Bill, would it be easier to drop the trans through the bottom and just support the engine using a cherry picker or something similar? I need new subframe bushings anyway.

Thanks Scotty, is that the 1 ton hoist from HF? Any special tools needed? I have a decent set of power tools and a pretty good set of jackstands/a jack.

On another note, if theres anyone else reading this thread and needs a good video to follow for rebuilding the trans take a look at this - 4T65 E Transmission Teardown Inspection - YouTube

Stop.. do you have a 4x4 and a piece of chain? Look up my how to remove a trans thread.

Always out the bottom unless you are pulling the engine for some reason. I don't put a hoist that'll get in the way of hopping under because there is the safe way and quick way to pull a trans. Quick way you get the subframe out of the way then pull the starter and all that stuff.

i had every bolt removed waiting for the tranny to come, so all i had to do was hold the engine up and drop the sub frame and out she came once my trans showed up.

dont think its the one ton, its the lightest one they got. i had to drill a new hole to make the arm longer when i pulled my engine out, the jack part was hitting the bumper good.

You can also use one of these engine support bars. I got mine for $54 on amazon.

Got my 4x4 for like $6 ... and actually it was a leftover from something else I was doing. Let's call it free.

Last year it supported the drivetrain in a red 04 while I did the oil pan. This year it held the 06's drivetrain while I swapped the trans twice just last week.
