Dexron 3 or 6?

Going to change the trans filter and fluid again after 30k miles, went to o'reillys for some dexron 3 and was sold out, guy at the counter said dexron 6 will work fine. Does it really? I've been looking online with some threads saying its fine while others say otherwise, being that the trans was made for dexron 3.
EDIT: This is for a 02 Grand Prix GTP

I always ran Valvoline Maxlife Trans fluid and it's compatible w/ 2, 3, & 6. It's only $17.87 at WM. Read your bottle and see what it says, but I'm pretty sure you'll be fine, especially since your doing good regular maintenance on the trans.

Dexron 6 is full synthetic and is backwards compatible with 3. That's my preference, although it's more expensive. There is no more Dexron 3, it's now marketed as Dex/Merc. Dex/Merc is cheaper and also works fine. It's like using regular oil instead of Mobil 1 synthetic, both are OK and everybody has an opinion on it....

In 2002 the engineers built the 4T65E based on the assumption that dex 3 would be used, so that is what I would suggest.

I wanted to use Dexron 6 because it was full synthetic, but whats worrying me is that I heard it was bad to mix regular oil with synthetic oil and since dropping the pan doesn't get rid of all the old fluids I dont want to mix the two. Think i'll stick with what I been using, thanks for the help!

I put Dex 6 in mine when it was broke, along with the shift kit and a couple bottles of Lucas.

It works. Still.

Nuff said.

Both work. Ever heard of synthetic blend oil? It's a mix of Dino and synthetic so mixing is not a big deal.

I've used Dex3 for 5 years. Last year I had a stranger change my fluid, and he used Dex6. All good and no noticeable difference. I will go back to Dex3 the next fluid change. Dex6 is WAY to expensive for my car that see's over-regular ATF changes.
