I understand what you are getting at.

What I'm getting at with NFC is by getting in a close proximity (~6" or less) with the token, and it starts the car without even pushing a button.

NFC typically works within a 3-4" range from the receiver. I've never seen a range farther than this.

It would also become extremely annoying to have the car start itself, or even lock/unlock itself for that matter. I can't tell you how many threads I've seen on the internet about people wanting it though.

Maybe I'm just a control freak.

This just in, I've decided to keep the Bluetooth as an add-on even if I decide not to have it be used as the primary means of detecting an authorized driver.

This way my phone app will allow you to change certain settings for the system, such as crank time, button press/hold time, etc.

Also to be built into the circuit is a delayed trigger output (optional to hook up) for those of you who want your racekar to have auto TCS off.

Sweet, so all someone would need to do is break in your car and push a button to start it.... Genius.

My latest thoughts are to build a semi-passive system using two transceivers, each relatively cheap ($12) along with an Arduino Fio and the main brain.

The Fio would be integrated into a custom-built fob with one of the transceivers, other small misc. hardware and two rechargeable CR2032 batteries along with some magic induction hardware. All this sealed up nicely in a waterproof fob, to be recharged via induction with no wires.

The fob would be in receive-only mode, sleeping for 5 seconds or so before listening again to save on battery power. I'm sure more measures can be taken to conserve battery, however these are just my rough thoughts. If a valid signal is received from the car unit, the fob will begin authentication, if not, it goes back to sleep for another 5 seconds.

I know I'm just creating more work for myself here, but this really seems like the only viable option.

I did have another idea, in which the driver wears a wristband containing an RFID tag, and the receiver would be placed directly adjacent the button, so authentication would only happen when you were ready to start the car. The only problem with this is that I'm not sure the range of the receiver would reach far enough even for this, as it would need to read about 6".

There is still much research to be done...

I like where this is going, very very interesting. I like having remote start, but the system you are talking about would be just awesome.

i would love something like this to use as a 'kill switch' on my bike. i am going to have a key and all, but jumping wires on the back of the key cylinder is easy as crap.

i wanted to make some form of a kill switch that was hidden somewhere. having something like this would mean that no one could ever start the bike without the token...nice.

no they would require the key as well if they push the button the car will keep cranking over but wont ever start. If someone has the intention of stealing my car i doubt a button, a key, or anything will stop them, especially on a 97, and now that most tow the cars away when stealing.

Unless they found the bypass module, tied the turn on lead to ground and then pressed the go button

but when they see a circuit like that, wouldnt you assume they'd be dumbfounded and leave it alone? or at least take them long enough that someone would see them?

besides, the best way to steal a bike is to just throw it in the back of a van and drive away. deal with starting it later...

Got a 500mA PowerMat for $10 to test this inductive charging idea. The coil and charge circuit seems like it should be small enough to fit into a fob, but I guess we'll see. This might work out after all.
