My goal was to put together this grand write-up with very well laid out step-by-step instructions and all kinds of pics and wiring schematics. But this is all your going to get because really this is all you need to know.
If you need assistance with how to cut your dash and pics on that, please refer to the 97-03 how-to. It's basically the same. Take your existing trim piece right under the windshield out, I removed the retaining clips on the HUD trim piece, I took chalk and traced a line on the dash to where I would be cutting. I also took my dremel and made a larger hole behind the IP cluster to make it easier to get a hand back there. '04+ are not like the 97-03 where behind the IP it's wide open.

    What you need:

    HUD display unit

    HUD rotary dial switch

    HUD dash trim piece

Harnesses with wire from display unit and swtich

    general wire and proper tooling

    Dremel of some sort

    patience and a steady hand

Going into this project not knowing if it would work, I did all the wiring first then cut my dash after it got the display unit to project the images.

    Top of clip harness
    1 2 3 4
    5 6 7 8

    HUD harness
Wire # color what is it?
    1-brown/yellow-data
    2-yellow-up control
    3-brown-down control
    4-black/white-ground
    5-white-illumination
    6-orange-12V
    7-brown-switch signal
    8-white-low referance

    Switch harness
Wire # color what is it?
    1-grey-switch illumination
    2-black-ground
    3-white-low referance
    4-brown-down control
    5-brown switch signal
    6-white-illumination
    7-yellow-up control
    8-blank

As you can hopfully see the HUD and switch harnesses share 5 wires minus the ground wire. These 5 (low referance, down and up controls, switch signal, and illumination) are the wires that will be directly hooked up. Meaning: I used 5/18 (5 wire/18 Gauge) thermostat wire found at my hardware store/Fleet Farm/ Menards/ Home Depot to run from the switch to the HUD harness. The thermostat wire is great because it bundled together and color coded to keep things neat and easy.
NOTE: I choose to drill out a new hole on the side of the center coucel away from the drivers right knee as a mounting spot for the switch. I priced out a new HUD center and was too much. You'll be getting all the other pieces from a junk yard an I hope you could find one there. The car I got this stuff from was t-boned very badly and actually broke the center councel from pushing the passenger seat into it. From this how-to, you can see that you could mount the switch where ever you wanted. Somewhere else in a dash, headliner, ect.

The two remaining wires on the switch (switch illumination and ground) I simply tapped into the traction control wires to provide the ground and red illumination.

The remaining 3 on the HUD harness (12v, ground, and data) I tapped into the IP cluster. You could use the DIC also but the IP is right there and made a logical choice.

(I have to check the following when I get home to make sure I have the correct colors matched up)
The brown/white DATA wire goes with the grey IP wire
The black ground remains the same color along with the orange 12v.
Like I stated, I'll check these later cuz I think one of them might have been a different color.

When I started researching this it seemed difficult. But after the install it seemed quite simple. I put a HUD in my 2000 so that part wasn't new to me.

The important parts would be the 5 common wires that get hooked up directly from the switch and the HUD. And then getting the 12v, ground, and data from the IP to the HUD. This probably seems confusing and maybe over your head. But wait until you get the parts infront of you and carefully look at them and read over this and it should make sense.

For those wondering about other GM vehicles to try this with. I could see why this wouldn't work as long as the other vehicle had the data wire found going to the IP. The other two wires were just power and ground and the other wires go from the switch to the HUD. The problem will be making the trim piece fit somehow or fabricating something to work. My mom has a 2000 Monte SS. I tried to see how close the trim pieces would be and looks like some work would have to be done. I wish I could have taken her dash aprt to see if it had the same wire set up but my mom would have any part in that.

I know that there are going to be a number of post asking for more info and pics and I'll do my best to answer anything.

    Most of all.....Good Luck!!!

Thank you for posting this info, I plan on doing it to my 04 next spring.

I tried to checkout the pics of the install but it seems the page is down. Could you post new pics or send some to me?

I read somewhere that the windsheild is different. It was in a forum post on some website that listed the problem of "blurry HUD" as being a problem of having a stock non HUD windsheild being installed on a HUD equipped Grand Prix. The post basically said some people were experiencing blurry HUDs due to non HUD windshields being installed on Grand Prixs at the factory due to a Pontiac mishap on the assembly line.

So does this mean we would also have to replace our windshields with HUD windshields or is this just wrong?

yeah its usually a "Clarity" rating difference...hud requires a better clarity than non hud IIRC!

Does anyone have an idea how much this total install would cost? When buying new parts? And maybe parts from junk yard?
