So I had this awesome idea to put a pod to the right of my HUD and so I did it. I pretty experienced with fiberglass so I got to work. As far as I know I’m the first and only person with a fully modified dash with an AEROFORCE SCAN Guage (or any for that matter) on the right side of the HUD. I completed it like two years ago but have been skeptical to show it till now because it sets my car apart. But here it is with all of its Glory!
Start by taking out your HUD cover everything snaps into the dash and I removed it with shims and flathead screw drivers. Be careful because you might break it where the “big part” of the HUD cover and vents meet. I know I did but epoxy worked to fix it.
The next part is up to you find a single pod at your local auto parts store. I had an extra triple pod (since I rolled my 2001 GTP Special Edition and they changed the design of the headliner of the 03’s FML) so I cut it up and used it.
I took a lot of time placing it in my car at various angles till I had the one that I liked the most. Then used a marker to draw a locator line. I took the cover back out and used plastic weld epoxy to fuse the two pieces together.
Then I used a Dremel with a sander bit to sand a hole large enough to shove all of the wires through to power the unit.
Now that the epoxy is dry it’s time for the body filler I recommend Rage Gold Premium Lightweight Body filler. It costs more than the crapy Bondo brand but you won’t want to shoot yourself later on when you’re sanding.
Once you get it smooth it’s time to prep for paint. This piece is key to take time on because it is subject to direct sunlight and it’s plastic if you cut corners or rush the process you will have bubbles later on.
I sanded all the little bumps off so that it would be glossy. Then sprayed it with plastic adhesion promoter (not krylon fusion) then moved onto regular filler primer, then white primer since it would make the red brighter later on. Add at least 3 coats of primer. I added about six in total but really I lost count.
As You can see The HUD is not blocked at all.
Looks Classic from the outside.
Nothin like really making a statement when someone walks by.
As people come down the road at you they can see that there is definitly something there. Darn glare from the camera though.
Then Paint to the desired color of Choice of your car and your set
Let me know what you think!!
