Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
Well I'm going to make a CAI here soon BUT since I work at pepboys and get a discount and I also work for the county (means I get aluminum free)
I need one more 4" mounting plate, one more 4" collar with boot, a sheet of aluminum (probably from a street sign) and a 4" k&n filter or Spectre filter
a little bit of free time (I work two jobs) and I will have a polished CAI with pics to show you all
OH also going to either cut the mounting bracket for the computer or get a tray for it not sure yet HELL I might even make one out of aluminum if I got enough time

well if the shop at my county job had a welder I would probably spend a couple extra hours a night there
BUT there is a new position for the county I just applied for it would mean driving an extra 10 mins (big whoop) the pay is the same the bright side of this deal is....bigger shop....MORE tools welders, metal brakes, and the machine for making mandrel bends
I hope I get the job the pay is the same but ^^^^^ can you say custom exhausts.....
then I might be able to make a little extra money selling exhaust systems
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
true! good luck on that i hope it works out for you!
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
minez been done and i was reading up on the safe mod 3800 thread to touch up on my brains and i noticed it said dont take out that screen... well i did without thinking really and is it that important? should i get a new one?

anyway, my baby sounds a lot louder & feels better, but sometimes i hear some clicking or rattling from the engine while stepping on it... the filter isn't in contact with anything because i suspended it with a zip tie... any ideas what the noise could be?
Ya mine makes the same noise. But only when I just start going normal speed, until I get to like 25mph. I know their is supposed to be a suction sound but is there supposed to be a rattle too

I would recommend putting it back in. It smooths out the air so that it reads an accurate reading. No REAL gains are seen from having it removed.

Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
This looks Awesome. Just got my 03 GT and might end up doing this. Can't seem to find the same filter on advance autoparts or Autozone's websites. Can anyone link to them? Also How much louder does the engine sound with the upgrade? I dont really want the sound to be noticeable. Thanks guys.
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
The engine doesn't sound any louder, unless you got a gtp but the filter makes a louder suction sound
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
right, maybe not so much louder, but i might say "throatier"... if that's a word. after this mod, my GT sounds about the same at idle, maybe just a little bit deeper. but when i step on it, she kinda roars now, i can definitely feel the extra horsepower & the throttle feels much more responsive.

idk if they actually list them on the websites. they're usually back with all the decals and stickers and hood scoops and that other ricey sh!t in the store if that helps.

i read in another forum somewhere about a dude who now hears a "rattlesnake" sound in the engine after doing a mod like this, which is just like what i hear at lower rpm's. it usually goes away before i hit 2nd, sometimes 3rd, but i really only hear it when i jump on the gas. i can only hope that's what the open cone intake is supposed to sound like...
seems to make sense though, like the filter is gasping in air in shorter bursts which sound like a rattlesnake at first, which increases with the rpms & tapers off into a roaring suction sound when the airflow & rpms are higher... idk, never heard anything like it before i took the airbox out... i'm not sure about the rattle, but the rest of it sounds great :D
edit: i might have a bad seal... i twisted the cone a bit, which seemed to help some with the rattling, but it's not gone. i'm gonna need to add some silicone sealant between the base of the cone and the connecting flange.
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
your INTAKE LEAKS.
If what you're hearing is the initial sucking noise from the TB opening and the engine sucking in the air, thats normal.
If you're at part throttle and it sounds like that, its leaking.

You were right man. I went out and retightened everything up and now you can only hear suction. Musta came a lil loose after drivin it. THANKS A LOT. I LOVE THIS FORUM, its so helpful. I appreciate it bud
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
OK got everything BUT the filter which I will pick up on payday payday is Thursday from one job and Friday from the other job
then all I nee is a little free time to make the CAI box and mount it in the car(after I polish it)
here is a picture of the parts minus the filter
http://www.grandprixforums.net/membe...cai-parts.jpeg
not sure if I'm going to use pop rivets or screws to hold the box together
I will be taking pictures during the build once I have everything ready.
and if nobody minds I will add it to the how-to section and title it CAI the prudy way or something like that

? huh? I dont see how it is anything like nawarkk's design.
I'm using a 4" polished aluminum tube and I needed to double my amount of aluminum for the CAI box now going to use 2 signs and the PCM will be mounted inside the CAI box. The bottom of the box will be mounted and the top with be removable for access to the filter for cleaning
I do like nawarkk's design simple and to the point, but I like making things a little more difficult its not fun unless its difficult
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
yo, just did my intake this morning and when i got home tonight my cone filter was pushed up against the siding of the engine bay...it is like sandwhiched between the piepe and the side,......... does this pose a problem? should it be suspended?
Re: Simple Intake (pictures)
EVERYONE WHO HAS DONE THIS MOD READ THIS
every once in a while you should pop the hood and make sure your intake is intact, i opened my hood the other day and my filter was about to fall off, the hose clamp had become loose. im sure most of you made this like nawarkk did with pvc, and the homedepot clamps, and i dont think this stuff is engine rated, it may become loose over time.
