Hi, So i have an airbag light on in my Grandprix. Normally i wouldnt worry about it however, it will not pass Virginia state inspection with it on.
State inspection is required to drive any vehicle on the road here.
What are some causes of the air bag light? easy fixes?
Is there anyway i can reset the light?

sounds like a broken clock spring. you have radio controls on the wheel? do they work? if not its the clock spring for sure.

I do have the controls, but there is an aftermarket radio, so they are not hooked up. Is it obvious whether or not its broken if i pull the airbag off?

theres a yellow plug under the dash, thats the clock spring plug, then another under the driver seat, take them off and back on a few times, see if that clears it up.

then theres a air bag module under the pass side seat that maybe bad.

How tall are you? A few years ago, every time my girlfriend-at-the-time drove my car, the airbag light would turn on. Turns out that she was just short enough that the airbags would disable when she moved the seat far enough forward to reach the pedals. My seats at the time couldn't adjust up/down so she had to move up super close to the wheel to compensate.

I once bought a Buick Lesabre with an air bag light on. Turned out, the air bag module was in a spot where all the rain could collect and corrode it severely.

I replaced the air bag module with a junkyard part, then drilled a drain hole nearby so the water wouldn't build up. Maybe not the best solution but good enough for my cheap winter beater.

pul the seat, then the carpet, and see if its corroded. some times you can un bolt it sand off the crap and bolt it back and it works, or it could be dead from the water. windshield cowl leaks can cause water on the floor too.

its just a clock spring, ive changed mine. and the air bag module, both were dead. neither are hard to replace.

not really. snap ring pliers are nice but i got mine off with two picks. and a 2 gear small puller worked well for me to get the steering wheel off.

just the other day i posed directions and a link for pics. http://www.grandprixforums.net/threa...l-broken-wires

Never touched the clock spring, but the air bag module was pretty easy.

I recall having to go through a reset procedure when I installed the one from the JY... can't say for sure what it was, though.

theres no reset i know of. if its fixed the light goes off. unless you got a real scanner that can clear it. but if it broken, the light comes right back on.

You might be right, it was a few years ago. As I recall though, when I put the new module in, the light stayed on until I fudged around with some fuses or something of that nature. In reality, it may have just taken some time for the PCM/BCM to be happy and turn the light off, and my tinkering had nothing to do with it.

i had mine scanned, it came back open loop driver side, being the radio controls did not work either we figured that was it.

ff a few months, ive still not fixed it, the car gets flooded with like 2 feet of water, like complete gut the car to dry it out flooded.

after that deal i got to the clock spring, radio controls came back to life, but the light was still on, so next was the airbag module, right after i swapped it, i started the car the airbag light was gone.

i did try to sand off the corrosion, but none of that worked, the water killed it.

So, I should try messing with the connections, get the corosion off of the airbag module, and if that doesnt work replace the clockspring/module?

yeah, pretty much, if cleaning the plugs dont help, its one of the two.

if you get a used one, its nice if the cars wheels are dead straight, once you take it out it will be centered. if the wheels are turned you'll have to center it.

i wound it up all the way to one side, slow and careful. then when it hit the end, i counted the full turns to the other side, then turned it back 1/2 that number, then installed it.
