Thread: 97 Alt Bracket on my 1999 GTP?

Is it possible to run a early style W-Body bracket on my 1999 GTP?

I am going to be swapping rockers within the next week or so and am wondering if I can put a 97 style alt. bracket on the car instead of the current one. I'd be looking to do this so if I replace rockers/springs/etc. again in the future, I won't have to keep pulling the bracket assy. off and draining coolant.

I think you would still have to pull anyway I thought the only difference between them was the cast elbow.

no you cant, not unless you also buy the alt for it. and why in the hell you want a cast elbow? they are a pita.

and you dont need to remove the alt or the alt bracket to do rockers. i just installed a set last month.

if your valve cover touches the bracket, loosen up the 3 bolts, and thats all you need to do, when done make em tight again, try not to play with it when its loose. i mean like 2 tunes loose just enough to get the cover off.

on second thought, to bad your not closer, id swap mine for yours any day lol

haha... thanks for the info. I was actually reading earlier today that you can in fact just loosen up those bolts and back the bracket off ever so slightly to get the valve cover off. I am hoping that is the case!

Also, Scotty, I am guessing your 98 has the old alt. setup though?

97/98 have that dumb cast lower elbow. so yup, i got one. my valve cover comes right off too lol

I'm thinking that I may have a bit tougher time with my valve cover clearing my 99+ style Alt. Bracket

It's easy to get it to clear. I just did it the other day.

yours is the 98 style bracket though right? I believe the 99+ style protrudes further over the valve cover

Scotty I have a 99+ style alt bracket that I'm not using adn the belt off a 2005 gt.

It works, ive got my 2000's bracket and alt on my 98 and its on my 2000.(gen 5 swap on 98)

he want to go the other way. 99 to a 97. bad idea lol

Personally I love the 97/98 style.. Means I only gotta replace one elbow.

and risk breaking the timing cover every time you take off the bracket. thats the part i dont like.

How do you risk breaking the timing cover?

when removing it it dont just come out, you have to wiggle and pull, wiggle to much the timing cover breaks where the elbow enters the cover. now you looking a much larger job to change the timing cover out.
