Hi and welcome back to YOUR thread! My apologies for hijacking it (borrowing it sounds better...lol). Yes, I'm sure it isn't the sensor. I really wish it was the sensor because it's sooo much easier and cheaper to replace that than anything else that could be leaking oil.

I would say those would be fine to use, a little rusty or not. A few of my tools look like that, too, because I have 3 sons who like to "borrow and not wipe off and return tools" to where they got them from. LOL

Good to hear! In the process of moving, haven't gotten the chance to pinpoint my leak, but maybe someday.......

Well, I'm FINALLY ready to do this oil pan gasket and motor mount! Seems like it's been forever waiting for the time to get to it, with moving and all, hopefully this weekend or next, really depends on if my sons have to work this Saturday or not.

Anyway, just wondering if I have to put rtv on it or not? I got the felpro gasket that comes with the plastic windage tray, the gasket is rubbery-looking and blue. I asked the guy at the parts store and he said no.

I've watched a bunch of videos on doing this pita job, is there anything I should be made aware of before we get ripping into this thing? lol

I love the fact that I've got 3 strong, young sons that like to borrow money from Mom and when the time comes to pay me back, it's usually "Well, Mom, umm, errr". LOL That's when I pull my trump card and remind them that they can pay me back by installing things on my car for "free labor". Hey, it's a win-win situation...... They don't have to pay me the cash back and I don't have a huge labor bill at the local shop.

all I used was just regular grey permatex gasket sealer, put a lot on the pan, put the windage tray on, then more sealer, my motor was super clean tho so im not worried about sealing issues and the fact I used 2.5 tubes of gasket sealer on the whole motor build.

just make sure you clean your sealing surfaces with brake cleaner or something like varsol and try with a clean rag/towel

I put alot of miles on my car well over 6k since august when i changed the oil and sensor so maybe I burned a quart or 2 off

i added a quart of oil and it brought to within the cross hatch marks right int he middle. Oil light didnt come back on so i figured it is ok and i dont need to put any more oil in it.

Is it normal to burn a quart or 2 within 3 or 4 months of 6,000 miles worth of driving? When I put a quart in, it brought the level to the middle of the cross hatch

yes its normal, even newer vehicles the factory says losing 1 qt in between oil changes is acceptable... that is pathetic.

Gm says 1 quart in 3,000 miles is normal.

I wouldnt go 6k on a oil change regardless, unless you are running a full syn. Both conventional oil and filters arent made to go that many miles.

Fill it up to the top dot every time, which is 4.5 quarts during an oil change.

Thanks you all. so that would make sense. I have went roughly 6k miles so far

I dont change my oil every 3k mile usually at least 6k miles or more with good high mileage oil. Oil these days are much better then decades ago and we no longer need to change oil every 3k miles

This motor had oil changes every 4K-5K

    This one every 3K

    Every 5K-6K

While the properties of lubrication for oil is supposedly better, it still gets dirty and deposits still happen. Which motor would you want your's to look like?

I suppose I am literally betting my engine that Castrol full synthetic oil and a WIX filter is sufficient for 6k miles. I can see the parts through the valve cover hole look as clean or cleaner than pic #2 - I'm not sure what that would mean for the other internals.

The oil loss mentioned above is normal and something I experience. Other vehicle manufacturers experience oil consumption as well.
