Hey guys. When I first bought the car, which was in the winter, I couldn't test if the A/C actually worked or not. Now that it's 70 degrees and sunny, I turned it on and no cold air comes out. I put some new R134a refrigerant in the car, but still, no cold air. When the A/C and/or the front/rear defrost is on, an obnoxious cranking/vibrating sound coming from the A/C compressor. At least that's where I think the sound is coming from. Any ideas? Thanks

Is the compressor spinning? If it's making noise the compressor is probably bad.

I know you can buy a/c kits from ebay, but I have never installed one myself

Had a 94 Formula years ago, and the compressor stopped working in it, a garage I took it to said I would need a compressor and a drier, and I would be looking at $800 if they replaced it and charged it up.

The compressor is spinning, and when it does it makes that grinding sound.

and this ^^^^^ is what should be done once again. if your up to it you can change all the parts then have a shop vac test it and fill it for you. this way you can save on all that labor.

FWIW when you do a compressor, drier is expected and so is an orifice tube.

I'd get the $10 seal kit, and do all those parts. Then have a shop vac/fill as suggested.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Where is the orifice tube located? My compressor kicks on and sounds good but it just blows hot air. I charged it last sumer with 20oz of a/c pro but it was back to blowing hot air after 2 days of driving.

    You have a leak then

look for a wet oily mess on one of the a/c lines. most of the time you find a dirty connection its the leak.

carl dye test the system. valve cores and compressor leaks very common. some times if leak is bad enough u can hear it. you can also put ur thumb over the valves to feel for back pressure. soapy water in spray bottle is your friend too.

m7x if you repair system with ebay kit be sure to properly flush evaporator and lines. if theres crap in the system u may have to replace the condenser. you cant properly flush a parallel flow condenser.

Where are these valves you speak of so I can check them? I'm going out to put in the orifice tube right now to see if its clogged. I will also swing by the parts store tomorrow and pick up the a/c seal kit as well.

The valves where you check the pressures and fill system.

Don't forget any part you replace like the drier/accumulator you must measure how much oil comes out of it and replace it with the new one. unless you plan on flushing the whole system including evaporator at which point you need to put back the full amount of oil.
