I have 2006 Pontiac Grad Prix 3.8 sc.

I am having a loud noise coming from the driver side tire. The noise was very quiet yesterday and now today is very loud. I think it sounds like a bearing but i want to make sure. The noise starts at about 20mph and up. It does go away/ get quieter when I turn the wheel. I replaced both hubs a few years ago but they did not make any noise, they were worn and wearing the tires. Yesterday it was dry and hot and now today it is heavy rain and cool, not sure that makes a difference. What do you guys think?

    Thanks

jack up that wheel lugs tight push and pull the top of the tire, your feeling for play. if the wheel moves the hub is bad.

Thank you for the quick reply! The rain stopped long enough for me to run out to the parking lot and check the play.... All i can say is wow.... that bearing has about 3/4 of an inch play each way. I am amazed it just started making noise.

i bet your brakes feel like they stopped working as well too. your abs light on? if so thats your first clue to a bad hub.

    best get on that soon.

yeah now that i think about it. the abs light is not on. it has felt like the rotor on the drivers side was really warped. I hope it makes it the 25 mile hike home tonight.... any idea the size of the cv bolt?

its either a 34 mm or 36 mm.

34 is stock, 36 is aftermarket. tip a 36 will work on a 34 nut. ive done it. yes its a bit loose but works.

if you dont have air tools, i find it best to take the wheel off then put the spare tire on then lower the car to the ground, then break the axle nut free.

Make sure you inspect all the other parts while you are at it. Tie rod ends, brakes, rotors.

Scotty a faster way to break it loose is to put a large screw driver in the rotor vane and let it jam against the caliper bracket. Works every time. Hell I have even used that trick to torque crank pulleys without issue.

last bearing i did i had just put the freshly painted f body calipers on. didn't want to take a chance messing up the paint.

i tell you this much, the one and only good part of the stock regal wheel was with the center cap off you could take the nut off, then start the job.

as Bill would say, anther reason regals are better lol

I can use a socket on the axle nut with my old crosslace rims and a crewdriver in the rotor vanes works as well

old as in not used any more cause

    A: they be ugly.

B: you cant run f bodys under them.

i hated the look of the regal wheel plus they all leaked air. i got a cool 80 in scrap for them.

they were 21 lb each and alloy wheels pay well per pound. the scrap yard had a mountain of them inside the building, 5 or 6 guys were ripping valve stems and wheel weights off stacking and palleting them up like a gun was on them lol
