I found that recently 93 octane has been getting up there in price (uncommon to see the 20 cent markup anymore), and I am soon switching to E85 in my DD stock GTP (with 3.2 pulley) so I have been experimenting with different E85 blends in the mean time.

After much experimentation, and a bit of math, i was able to run e30 (there is a pick-a-mix e85 station in greenville) without causing any gruff to the stock fuel system, and I run very easily with zero KR ever in the cold even... Fuel trims that are normally a few positive are now about +14.

Next time you are at the gas station with E85 fill up 3/4 tank with 87 and pile in e85 on top. A 25% to 40% e85 mix will run just fine in a stock GTP, or a modded one with room in the injectors. If you see a check engine light it means you will be running slightly leaner than 14.7 at cruise, and a little lean at WOT, which on my stock car did not cause any problems.... I expect even a edge tuned car to have no issues either.

I also plan on doing this in my TBSS during the summer.

It works, ive put many a tank through of E30. Octane is probably between 93 and 95 according to math.

You should also include that its still e70 right now...winter blend once e85 comes back out in the summer you'll have to adjust your ratio

The science isnt that specific. In the winter you know you can run a bit extra and the summer a bit less but I wouldn't think about it.

This will probably cost you more money then just using the correct fuel due to the lower energy content of E85.

If you're questioning the ethanol rating you can always test it, all you need is a 10ml graduated cylinder and water. I bought one just because.

Tested that enough to the point that I cant notice it. Its such a low concentration, and I never get the calculated "25% loss of mpg" I should get with pure e85.. its usually closer to 15%.

I'm sure it is slightly less, but over here I am paying roughly 6 bucks less for 14 gallons of ghetto premium over regular premium... so it goes quite far.

    $54.46 (14gal @3.89/gallon) = 322 miles @ 23mpg = $0.169 / mile

    $48.46 = 273 miles @ 19.55mpg (15% less) = $0.177 / mile

Ghetto premium costs more per mile then regular premium even at a 15% penalty.

its not 15% less even with the most extreme interpretation of the math... its at an absolute max 8% less, and reality points to 4% being right....

    $54.46 (14gal @3.89/gallon) = 322 miles @ 23mpg = $0.169 / mile

    $47.46 (14gal @3.39/gallon) = 306 miles @ 21.85mpg (5% worse) = $0.155 / mile

Its an average of $5 a tank savings for me assuming a 5% loss in range, and $7 without the range loss.

You can save even more $$$ if you make your own ethanol... Lots of work though, just sayin!

Bulk corn syrup, 55 gal drum, some yeast and heat... Whoola! Ethanol!

Even in DC E85 is currently almost a dollar cheaper per gallon vs pump............

E85 is worth every penny and the hassle of only having one station in all of the DC area!
Go ahead and ask jayroca what he thinks about it............
