hi. my son has a 2000 gtp that wont stay running. it will start, and then stall. you can keep it running by pumping the gas when its about to stall. it seems to be a fuel related issue. i intend to change the fuel filter tomorrow, weather permitting. should i be looking anywhere else? can anybody recommend a good scan tool for me?thanks in advance, jim

id say your injectors are extremely blocked up but my first bet is the fuel pump or fuel pump relay...try the filter first tho its cheapest good luck

How long does it run before it stalls?

When it stalls, does it start right back up?

Pull the vacuum line of the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is any fuel at the vacuum port, if so, the pressure regulator is probably shot. Change the fuel filter as you mentioned. Other than that nothing is coming to mind right now depending on how you answer my first couple of questions.

Things that come to mind...fuel pump relay, fuel pump, Theft Deterrent system (not high on the list but a remote possibility).

it will run for maybe 5 seconds before it stalls, and yes, it starts right back up.i can hear the fuel pump come on. there is pressure at the test port on the fuel rail. thanks, jim

Ahh, that brings up something else you can test, the fuel pressure at the schrader valve. There may be 'pressure' there, but is it enough. Should be around 40 - 45psi I believe.

if it starts up and then dies it sounds like a CPS (crank position sensor).

if it is that, have fun tearing apart the motor to get at it.

I thought about the CPS as well, but the symptoms he is describing are not typical of a CPS failure. That said, you cant really rule it out either. If it is the CPS, I have a write up in the How To area on how to replace it. Its not that hard to do, just kinda labor intensive because you have to remove the harmonic balancer.

Unfortunately no. The only thing that you can really do is try to keep soaking it. Try something like PB Blaster or some other penetrating fluid. Last resort, I guess you could cut the lines and use -AN connections to plum in a new filter.

The P0442 code is an evaporative system or EVAP system. This code is often caused by a loose gas cap or a bad one but it wont cause any driveability issues.

The P0330 is possibly a bad knock sensor and I believe it is the rear one (closest to the firewall). And Im not really sure that even that could cause driveability issues. I suppose it could if it failed in such a way that the PCM thought you were getting massive amounts of knock, I just dont have enough experience with that particular issue to say for sure though.

That is a general misfire code, meaning there have been misfires but not necessarily pinpointed to a particular cylinder. Had it seen the misfire on a specific cylinder, it would have gave you P0301, P0302, P0303, etc. with the last digit pointing to the specific cylinder.

You might need to do a tune up (new plugs, wires, etc.) or you I suppose you could have a coil pack acting up too.
