so i went to turn my car on after work and it turned on like normal, but then the guages started acting weird and it shut off. it turned back on and i got it home but im just curious why something like that would happen. its not the first time something like this happened, like i would go to turn it on to listen to the radio or something without turning the engine on and it would shut off and then work fine. any ideas? its a 97 gt if that makes any difference lol thanks

Check the battery cables and make sure they are clean and tight.

^ do that and check/clean grounds. Also was it all gauges or just the tach?

Well if the tach dropped, then very shortly after it stalled, that is the result of a bad crankshaft position sensor.

Dome lights may dim, but shouldn't flicker. That adds another clue to check grounds. Engine ground is where the engine/trans meet in front, and main ground is right off the neg battery terminal.

Alright but cleaning grounds is easy, just need sockets and a wire brush.

The crank sensor may stall your engine at any time, often it will stall and start right back up, or some make you wait until it cools a bit. Not fun.

I had the same problem and mine ended up being the ground wire coming off the battery to the block.

Check your grounds and battery as stated, and test the crank sensor (I think there's a way to test them with a multimeter).

If those aren't it, then I'd bet it has to do with your ignition switch or cylinder, whatever it's called. The thing you put your key into. My gauges would randomly stop working for a while and I'm almost certain it's corroded connections in my ignition switch.

^ another possibility. Update this thread, and/or let us know if you found the problem.
